En 1845, à l'initiative de l'abbé Pierre-Paul Blanck (1809-1873) 1 , une congrégation de soeurs bénédictines s'installe au couvent Saint-Marc de Gueberschwihr 2 . Elles sont devenues soeurs de Saint-Joseph en 1868. Depuis les années 1870 la congrégation s'est étendue à travers toute l'Alsace et même au-delà ; le couvent Saint-Marc devenant la maison-mère 3 . De Niederbronn, en Basse-Alsace, jusqu'à Delle, dans le Haut-Rhin (aujourd'hui Territoire de Belfort), à la veille de la Grande Guerre, les soeurs de Saint-Joseph sont présentes dans quatre-vingt-dix localités. Dans les premières années de sa création, la congrégation se consacre principalement à l'accueil d'orphelins et d'adolescents en diicultés morales et comportementales. Rapidement, elle se spécialise dans les soins à domicile tout en maintenant son activité originelle dans les orphelinats de Delle et d'Ebersmunster 4 . Après 1898, l'action des soeurs de Saint-Joseph est étroitement liée à celle de la fédération de charité du diocèse de Strasbourg, la Caritas 5 , présidée
