En 1894, lors des championnats de Paris de cyclisme, une course de 100 km pour « dames » voit la victoire de Mademoiselle Lisette. Elle est alors la première sportive française présentée par la presse comme une championne. Cette distinction ne signifie nullement que la figure de la championne s’impose. Ses avocats sont rares. Elle est bien plus l’objet d’un rejet. Celui-ci passe notamment par l’euphémisation de l’expression – la championne devient « champion femme », « femme champion », plus simplement, championne entre guillemets, etc. – et la mise sous tutelle masculine des exploits cyclistes féminins. L’histoire de la carrière de Lisette, entre 1894 et 1898, révèle ainsi à quel point l’acceptation de l’excellence sportive féminine est difficile. Parallèlement, elle lève le voile sur un pan méconnu de l’histoire des sportives : l’existence d’un milieu de coureuses professionnelles qui font certains beaux jours des vélodromes français et anglais. Cette découverte invite à corriger l’historiographie du cyclisme féminin de la Belle Époque. Jusqu’à présent en effet, elle privilégiait les pratiques amateurs des femmes issues de milieux sociaux favorisés. Tel n’est pas le cas ici. En partant de l’étude des discours de presse sur Mademoiselle Lisette et en tentant de reconstruire son parcours malgré l’absence d’archives, le présent article propose donc d’interroger la difficile reconnaissance de la première femme championne de sport France – une femme discrète, mais qui dérange trop l’ordre des genres pour être pleinement acceptée, reconnue.
Résumé Si des formes anciennes et variées de jeux de raquettes étaient déjà connues voilà des siècles, le tennis, tel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui, est un sport jeune. C’est un produit de la société de la fin du XIX e siècle. Plus précisément, c’est le produit d’un espace social et territorial particulier, celui qu’arpentent les classes aisées. Un univers qui prend sa forme, construit son identité et ses usages modernes à la charnière des XIX e et XX e siècles, en liaison avec le tourisme balnéaire et la plage comme point de polarisation. C’est au travers de cette plage, et en particulier de son illustration par les cartes postales, qu’est abordée ici la question de la diffusion tennistique entre 1875 et l’avant Première Guerre Mondiale.
