Tropical forests shelter an unparalleled biological diversity. The relative influence of environmental selection (i.e., abiotic conditions, biotic interactions) and stochasticdistance-dependent neutral processes (i.e., demography, dispersal) in shaping communities has been extensively studied for various organisms, but has rarely been explored across a large range of body sizes, in particular in soil environments. We built a detailed census of the whole soil biota in a 12-ha tropical forest plot using soil DNA metabarcoding. We show that the distribution of 19 taxonomic groups (ranging from microbes to mesofauna) is primarily stochastic, suggesting that neutral processes are prominent drivers of the assembly of these communities at this scale. We also identify aluminium, topography and plant species identity as weak, yet significant drivers of soil richness and community composition of bacteria, protists and to a lesser extent fungi. Finally, we show that body size, which determines the scale at which an organism perceives its environment, predicted the community assembly across taxonomic groups, with soil mesofauna assemblages being more stochastic than microbial ones. These results suggest that the relative contribution of neutral processes and environmental selection to community assembly directly depends on body size. Body size is hence an important determinant of community assembly rules at the scale of the ecological community in tropical soils and should be accounted for in spatial models of tropical soil food webs. AimMapping Amazonian biodiversity accurately is a major challenge for integrated conservation strategies and to study its origins. However, species boundaries and their respective distribution are notoriously inaccurate in this region. Here, we generated a georeferenced database of short mtDNA sequences from Amazonian frogs, revised the species richness and the delimitation of bioregions of the Eastern Guiana Shield and estimated endemism within these bioregions. MethodsWe used an extensive DNA-based sampling of anuran amphibians of Amazonia using nextgeneration sequencing to delimit Operational Taxonomic Units (OTU) and their distribution. We analysed this database to infer bioregions using Latent Dirichlet Allocation modelling. We then compared endemism within these bioregions based on our results and the current IUCN database, and inferred environmental variables that contributed the most to the biogeographic pattern. ResultsThe recognized anuran species richness within the focal area increased from 440 species currently listed by the IUCN Red List to as much as 876 OTUs with our dataset. We recovered eight bioregions, among which three lie within the Eastern Guiana Shield. We estimated that up to 82% of the OTUs found in this area are endemic, a figure three times higher than the previous estimate (28%). Environmental features related to seasonal precipitations are identified as playing an important role in shaping Amazonian amphibian bioregions. Main conclusionsOur results have major implications for defining future conservation priorities of this vast area given that endemism in most Amazonian bioregions is vastly underestimated, and might therefore hide a large portion of threatened species. Moreover, these findings raise concern about meta-analyses based on public databases within Amazonia dealing with poorly known groups.

The mechanisms by which the brain binds together inputs from separate sensory modalities to effect a unified percept of events are poorly understood. This phenomenon was studied in males of the dart-poison frog Epipedobates femoralis. These animals physically and vigorously defend their territories against conspecific calling intruders. In prior field studies with an electromechanical model frog, we were able to experimentally evoke this aggressive behavior only when an auditory cue (advertisement call) was presented simultaneously with a visual cue (vocal-sac pulsations). In the present field experiments, we used a modified version of the electromechanical model frog to present territorial males with visual and auditory cues separated by experimentally introduced temporal delays or spatial disparities to probe temporal and spatial integration in this animal. In temporal integration experiments, bimodal stimuli with temporal overlap during calling bouts consistently evoked aggressive behavior; stimuli lacking bimodal temporal overlap were relatively ineffective at the same task. In spatial integration studies, despite presenting the components of the bimodal stimulus with an initial spatial disparity of up to 12 cm, fighting behavior persisted. These results demonstrate that temporal and spatial integration may be reliably estimated in a freely behaving animal in its natural habitat and that we can use aggressive behavior in this species as an index of cross-modal integration in the field.animal communication ͉ territorial defense ͉ anuran ͉ amphibian ͉ Dendrobatidae
