Resumo: O presente artigo tem como objetivo colocar em discussão os debates historiográficos em torno da apropriação da figura do bandeirante como mito e símbolo da história paulista nos primeiros anos do século XX, particularmente entre a intelectualidade ligada ao Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de São Paulo, com enfoque ao seu sócio fundador Orville Derby. Fundado em fins do século XIX, o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de São Paulo teria exercido uma influência decisiva sobre a construção e legitimação do símbolo bandeirante, e sendo considerada uma instituição científica, partilhava da crença que as ciências poderiam ter um papel atuante no desenvolvimento de São Paulo e, logo, na almejada influência política e cultural do estado em meio à federação republicana. Esse papel é empiricamente verificável em suas publicações, particularmente na revista que começou a ser editada um ano após a fundação do Instituto, em 1895, como exemplo das disputas territoriais das divisas de São Paulo com estados limítrofes.
I) INTRODUÇÃOA produção historiográfica voltada ao bandeirismo, particularmente a que aborda a construção da imagem da "epopeia bandeirante", tem se desenvolvido ativamente. Trata-se de um tema bastante estudado e abordado de diversas formas, dentre as quais podemos destacar a sua apropriação e utilização no discurso político com fins ideológicos, a afirmação da pujança econômica ou a visão 1 Com base no trabalho de iniciação científica "Orville Derby na Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de São Paulo e a construção da imagem do bandeirante", financiado durante o ano de 2012 pela Fapesp, e orientado pelo Prof. Dr. Jaime Rodrigues.
RESUMO Entre a passagem do século XIX para o XX a cidade de São Paulo passou por uma série de transformações materiais e nas formas de seus habitantes se relacionarem com o espaço urbano: a instalação de novos equipamentos urbanos; a intensificação da chegada de imigrantes; mudanças no sistema burocrático e administrativo municipal; a introdução de novos gostos e hábitos de consumo; a construção de inúmeras fábricas e de edificações comuns, dentre outros fatores, permitiram a expansão da cidade para além do seu núcleo inicial, conhecido como Triângulo ou Colina Histórica. Os setores médios participaram desse rol de transformações, notadamente na construção de edificações voltadas principalmente para moradia, aproveitando-se das oportunidades que o mercado rentista oferecia. Muitos desses edifícios foram projetados para cumprir uma função mista, congregando moradia e comércio, tipologia usual na porção leste da cidade, em especial no Brás. O bairro, conhecido por seu parque fabril, apresentou uma série de espaços comerciais que se dedicaram ao ramo de vestuário e estética pessoal, com lojas de roupas, alfaiates e profissionais ligados ao âmbito da joalheria. Neste artigo procuramos entender o papel dos proprietários desses espaços na configuração material do Brás e dos bairros próximos. Para tanto, recorre-se aos Sistemas de Informações Geográficas, espacializando diferentes fontes documentais.
