In this article, we summarize several metacognitive strategies designed to improve reading comprehension in students with learning and reading disabilities and describe an instructional model showing how to teach comprehension strategies to students. Each recommended strategy has been formally evaluated and found to be effective for improving students' reading comprehension. Practical suggestions are also provided to help teachers implement these strategies in their classrooms.
Background: Carbon dioxide concentration trending is used in chronic management of children with invasive home mechanical ventilation (HMV) in clinical settings, but options for end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO 2 ) monitoring at home are limited.We hypothesized that a palm-sized, portable endotracheal capnograph (PEC) that measures EtCO 2 could be adapted for in-home use in children with HMV.
Methods: We evaluated the internal consistency of the PEC by calculating an intraclass correlation coefficient of three back-to-back breaths by children (0-17 years) at baseline health in the clinic. Pearson's correlation was calculated for PEC EtCO 2 values with concurrent mean values of in-clinic EtCO 2 and transcutaneous CO 2 (TCM) capnometers. The Bland-Altman test determined their level of agreement. Qualitative interviews and surveys assessed usability and acceptability by family-caregivers at home. Results: CO 2 values were collected in awake children in varied activity levels and positions (N = 30). The intraclass correlation coefficient for the PEC was 0.95 (p < 0.05). The Mexican Gustavo Sainz has been seen as one of the initiators of the Latin American Post-Boom, largely because of the humor, accessibility and interest in popular culture that characterize some of his work and are often said to characterize the Post-Boom in general. His 1974 novel La princesa del Palacio de Hierro (The Princess of the Iron Palace) is a representative case. However, the Post-Boom's incorporation of "popular" elements within a relatively sophisticated "new novel" framework is a highly problematic process. This can be seen, in this novel, in the broad relationship of the "funny" and the "serious." The protagonist appears to revel in her comic account of transgressive adventures while revealing her simultaneous socialization into the norms of family and gender that are seemingly transgressed. At the same time, her own "fun" narration (transgressive of frivolous) is problematized further by the commentary of an implied author, figured as an intellectual and, possibly, a male. The function of the novel's humor thus emerges as both to transgress and mark the transgression, creating an interplay between the desire to affirm identity and an awareness that all identity is a construction based on hierarchical models. It is this sense of the contingency of identity that perhaps underlies the shift in emphasis and textual character represented by the Post-Boom.
