Am 11. Februar d. J. starb nach langer Krankheit, tiefbetrauert von seinen Kollegen, Dr. Conrad L a a r , Professor an der Universitat Bonn.Conrad L a a r wunde am 22. M a n 1853 in Hamburg als Sohn eines Kaufmanw geboren. Nachdem er im Jalhre 1872 idas Zeugnis der Reife am Gymnasium seiner Vaterstaidt erhalten hiatte, studierte er am Polytechnikum in Hannover Chemie. Er setzte 'dann sein Studium an der Universitat Leipnig fort und promovierte dort 1879 mit einer Arbeit iiber ,,Sulfanilsaure".Der groije Ruf, den damals August K e k u 1 6 in der wissenschaftlichen Welt hatte, verianljafite den jungen Chemiker, zur w d e r e n Ausbildung nach Bonn zu gehen.Wahrend ider Jahre 1880 bis 1882 bekleidete er eine Assistentenstelle bei K e k u 1 6 , im nachsten Jahre eine solohe bei dem Physiologen P f 1 ii g 0 r. Er kehrte dann nach Hannover nuruck, habilitierte sich dort im Wintersemester 1883/84, gab aber aus Gesundheitsrucksichten seine Dmentur bald wiedsr auf und kam von neuem nach Bonn. Hlier entstanden dann seine grundlegenden Arbeiten iiber Tautomerieerschleinungen.In seine zweite hannowrische Zeit fallt seine Verheiratung mit Fraulein Huberta Gynz von Rokowska.Von 1895-1699 war Conraid L a a r unter C. B i n z chemiwher Assistent lam pharmakologischen Institut, 1902 habilitierte er sich in Bonn fur Idas Fach Chemie, ,,besondew in Anwenldung auf Photographie", 1910 erhielt er den Titel Professor, 1923 einen Lehrauftrag fur P ho t ocheim i 8.Conrad L a a r war ein bemh&dener, sympathisoher Mensch, dessen Lebensschifi sich seit seiner Bonner Habilitation in ruhigen Bahnen bewegte, ein Gelehrter, der seinerzeit maagebend in die theoretilsche Eutwicklung lder Chemie eingegriffen hat. Es handelt sich hier um folgenldes:In den Jahren 1857 und 1858 batte August K 0 k u 115 seine beriihmte Valendehre aufgestellt, die bis zum hmtigen Tage die unentbehrliohe theoretische Grundlage der o r g a n i d e n Chemie ist. Mit ihrer Hilfe liefien sioh nicht nur {die fast unzahligen organischen Verbieduagen in ein groijes, wohlgeordnetas System bringen, vor allem konnto man ounmohr fast siimtliohe Isomerieerscheinungen auf die einfachste Weise erklaren. Zwei Sohwierigkeiten stellten sich aber bald heraus. Einerseits fand man boi einer Reihe von Verbindungen mehr Ieomere, als die Theorie vorlaussehen lieD, andererseits lernte man Verbindungen kennen, denen man rnit gleicher Ber eoh t igung mehrer e Formeln zuert eilen konnte. Im ersteron Falle hatte man zu wenige Valenzformeln zur V e r f w , im letzteren Fallo zu viele. Die Behebung der orsteren Sahwiorigkeit verdanken wir v a n ' t H o f f und 1 e B e 1, den. Sie fiihrten raumchemische Betraohtungen in die Chemie ein und srganzten so aufs glucklichste die K e k u 1 I5 sohe Valemlehre, die sich nur mit Iden gegensaitigen Bindungen der Atome befafit, nicht aber rnit ihren raumlichen Lagerungen.
