The aim of this study was to investigate the Brazilian scientific production about acupuncture in dentistry, outlining the profile of the works about the subject presented at the Meetings of the Brazilian Society of Dental Research (SBPqO). It was a cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, based on secondary data. An analysis of all abstracts presented in the last ten SBPqO Meetings (2009-2018) published in the annals of the event was carried out. For the research the location of the term "acupuntura" or "acupuncture" among the abstracts was realized and the following information was collected: type of institution that carried out the research (public or private), Brazilian region where it was realized, area or specialty of dentistry and whether it involved humans or animals. Of the 26,514 dental research abstracts published in the annals, only 27 papers were experimental studies or systematic reviews about the subject. Of the total, 23 (85.2%) were developed in public institutions, 15 (55.6%) did not receive financial support 20 (74.1%) were carried out in humans and 13 (48.2%) were developed in the Southeast region. Regarding the dental specialty, the majority (70.4%) investigated acupuncture in "Temporomandibular Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain". Therefore, it can be concluded that few acupuncture studies in dentistry have been developed in the last ten years in Brazil, according to the papers presented at the SBPqO Meetings. Thus, it is suggested that research on the subject be carried out and widely disseminated between the academic and professional milieu. Keywords: Acupuncture Therapy. Dental Research. Evaluation of the main criteria of facial profile aesthetics and attractiveness Evaluation of the main criteria of facial profile aesthetics and attractiveness Avaliação dos principais padrões de perfil facial quanto a estética e atratividadeABSTRACT Background: The parameters of beauty and facial attractiveness have a significant impact on the population because aesthetic standards are important factors of social acceptance. The aim of this study was to assess the major determinants of facial profile aesthetics and attractiveness according to laypeople and correlate the obtained results with ethnicity. Methods: A cohort of 125 patients (or their guardians) receiving treatment in municipal or private health care services in Caruaru, PE, Brazil, was analyzed. A defined sequence of 6 photos was shown to each individual, who then assigned a score of 0-10 for evaluation of aesthetics and beauty. The images were previously treated and manipulated using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and corresponded to the main criteria of facial profile (classes I, II, and III) and ethnicity. Results: Average values of 8.02 ± 1.63 were obtained for Caucasian class I, 6.60 ± 2.35 for African class I, 4.72 ± 2.71 for Caucasian class II, 4.23 ± 2.29 for African class II, 4.54 ± 2.33 for Caucasian class III, and 3.49 ± 2.10 for African class III. African facial profiles were considered statistically less attractive than Caucasian facial profiles. Conclusions: The facial criteria of both Caucasian class I and African class I were the most attractive, whereas to the facial criteria of class III were less attractive. However, in this study, the African class received lower scores for aesthetics and attractiveness in all criteria. Keywords: Esthetics. Perception. Facial asymmetry. As imagens tinham sido previamente tratadas e manipuladas usando o programa Adobe Photoshop CS3 e representavam os principais padrões do perfil facial (classes I, II e III) e tipos raciais. Conclusões:This work was performe...
To evaluate the level of knowledge on tooth avulsion among undergraduate students enrolled in Nursing, Physical Education, and Dentistry programs at the Caruaru Association of Higher Education (ASCES), as well as to analyze these results according to the variables of age, gender, prior information, and prior experience at the time when the questionnaire was applied. Materials and Methods: A multiplechoice, structured questionnaire was administered to students at three different time moments: at the beginning of the study, immediately after a lecture on tooth avulsion, and 3 months later in Caruaru, PE, Brazil. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: Results showed that the knowledge of students at the beginning of the study was low. However, the mean number of correct answers increased significantly for all three groups of students immediately after the lecture; 3 months later, almost all classes still showed significantly higher mean results when compared to findings from the beginning of the study. Students with prior experience, or who had received information previously, attained a significantly higher average of correct answers. Conclusion: The level of knowledge on tooth avulsion at the beginning of the study was low for the students of Physical Education and Nursing as compared to dental students. An increased amount of time devoted to theoretical and practical teaching activities on tooth avulsion during college and after graduation would be extremely important to consolidate such knowledge.
