The title compounds are prepared by heating the elements or binary sulfides in alumina crucibles (1173 K, 48 h) and characterized by single crystal XRD, magnetic measurements, and 151 Eu/ 119 Sn Moessbauer spectroscopy. Eu5Sn3S12 and Eu4LuSn3S12 crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pmc21 with Z = 2. The crystal structures contain one-dimensional chains of edge-sharing SnS6 octahedra and corner-sharing SnS 5 trigonal bipyramids. Five Eu sites are seven-or eightfold coordinated by S atoms. Lu atoms in Eu4LuSn3S12 show a strong site preference for one of the two Eu 3+ positions of Eu5Sn3S12. Magnetic ordering for Eu5Sn3S12 and Eu4LuSn3S12 sets in below 5 and 3 K, respectively. -(JAKUBCOVA, P.; JOHRENDT*, D.; SEBASTIAN, C. P.; RAYAPROL, S.; POETTGEN, R.; Z. Naturforsch., B: Chem.
Structure D 2000 Structure and Properties of Mixed-Valence Compound Eu5Zr3S12. -Needle-shaped crystals of the title compound and Eu 3.67 Sr 1.33 Zr 3 S 12 are prepared by solid state reactions of mixtures of the elements and ZrS2 (943-1275 K, 72-130 h) and characterized by single crystal XRD. The compounds crystallize isotypically in the hexagonal space group P62m with Z = 1. The structure contains one-dimensional chains of edge-sharing ZrS6 octahedra. 151 Eu Moessbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements prove the existence of three Eu 2+ and two Eu 3+ ions in the unit cell of the Curie paramagnetic compound Eu5Zr3S12. -(JAKUBCOVA, P.; SCHAPPACHER, F.
