A catalytic protocol for the base-mediated amidation of unactivated esters with amino alcohol derivatives is reported. Investigations into mechanistic aspects of the process indicate that the reaction involves an initial transesterification, followed by an intramolecular rearrangement. The reaction is highly general in nature and can be extended to include the synthesis of oxazolidinone systems through use of dimethyl carbonate.

Lees, and independently Hill, described an irreducible character of GL n (Z/p h Z) for h > 1, which is an analogue of the Steinberg character in the h = 1 case. We give a new construction of this analogue. In particular, we prove that it is induced from the Steinberg character of an appropriate parabolic subgroup. The expedient synthesis of compounds enriched in sp character is key goal in modern drug discovery. Herein, we report how a single pot Suzuki-Miyaura-hydrogenation can be used to furnish lead and fragment-like products in good to excellent yields. The approach has been successfully applied in formats amenable to parallel synthesis, in an asymmetric sense, and in the preparation of molecules with annotated biological activity.

Abstract. By considering the specialisation s λ (1, q, q 2 , . . . , q n−1 ) of the Schur function, Stanley was able to describe a formula for the number of semistandard Young tableaux of shape λ in terms of the contents and hook lengths of the boxes in the Young diagram. Using specialisations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, we derive corresponding formulae, first given by El Samra and King, for the number of semistandard symplectic and orthogonal λ-tableaux.

Abstract. We decompose the restriction of ramified principal series representations of the p-adic group GL(3, k) to its maximal compact subgroup K = GL(3, R). Its decomposition is dependent on the degree of ramification of the inducing characters and can be characterized in terms of filtrations of the Iwahori subgroup in K. We establish several irreducibility results and illustrate the decomposition with some examples.
