There is no human activity that is risk free, including those most trivial and essential for survival, such as eating. Various factors impact the risk perception of a population, such as whether the risk is voluntary, known, brings some benefits or whether the information about the risk is provided by sources seen as trusted. Furthermore, regional and cultural aspects, gender and age can also have an impact on risk perception, and the level of scientific knowledge of the individual about the risks has in many cases little impact on the risk perception. On most countries, the perception of consumers to certain risks present in food, including genetically modified organisms (GMD), pesticides and food additives is high, probably due to the lack of confidence on the industry and governmental authorities that are responsible to control the risks. Food that are considered more natural, such as organic food and "GMD free", are normally perceived as less risky/more healthy. Knowing the perception of the population regarding the risks present in food is essential to design clear and transparent risk communication strategies, which should consider, in addition to scientific information, the subjective aspects that affects the risk perception.
RULES FOR NOMENCLATURE OF PESTICIDES COMMON NAMES Abstract This work sought to subsidize the actions of the Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA) in the standardization of the nomenclature of the active ingredients used in pesticides, according to international norms. The presented rules result of the work of revision of the spelling of the common names of the pesticides in use in Brazil, published in the Relação de monografias dos ingredientes ativos de agrotóxicos, domissanitários e preservantes de madeira of ANVISA (2002), according to Resolution N. 347/02.The general principles of attribution of common names published by International Standards Organization (ISO) and the rules of nomenclature of organic compounds were used. The article doesnt intend to drain the discussion on that theme, suggesting the standardization of the spelling of the common names of the pesticides to facilitate the use of the information for the technicians of the academic, commercial and government areas.
This study aimed to assess the food-related attitudes through the application of a structured questionnaire to 1,000 individuals applied in three environments (groups) in the Federal District of Brazil (supermarkets, universities and hospitals/clinics) using multivariate logistic regression, with special focus on pesticides and genetically modified (GM) food. Outpatients in hospital/ clinic, women and older individuals were significantly more likely to adopt diets or attitudes considered or perceived as healthy (including high consumption of fruits and vegetables, acquiring organic food, and adopting procedures to remove pesticide residues from food). When income and/or education impacted the results, the correlation was negative. Over 60% of the population believe it is possible to produce food without using pesticides, mainly the hospital/clinic group, younger individuals, and women, and 95.3% think that the presence of pesticides in food should be indicated on the labels, mainly the hospital/ clinic group and older individuals. High worry about pesticides and GM food was associated with most healthy food-related attitudes. The results of this study are important for food-related communication strategies conducted by health authorities, aiming at driving specific population segments to a healthier and more conscious diet.
