An extremely well-preserved dinosaur (Cf. Edmontosaurus sp.) found in the Hell Creek Formation (Upper Cretaceous, North Dakota) retains soft-tissue replacement structures and associated organic compounds. Mineral cements precipitated in the skin apparently follow original cell boundaries, partially preserving epidermis microstructure. Infrared and electron microprobe images of ossified tendon clearly show preserved mineral zonation, with silica and trapped carbon dioxide forming thin linings on Haversian canals within apatite. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of materials recovered from the skin and terminal ungual phalanx suggests the presence of compounds containing amide groups. Amino acid composition analyses of the mineralized skin envelope clearly differ from the surrounding matrix; however, intact proteins could not be obtained using protein mass spectrometry. The presence of endogenously derived organics from the skin was further demonstrated by pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GCMS), indicating survival and presence of macromolecules that were in part aliphatic (see the electronic supplementary material).
This study examined the nature and degree of organizational change that occurs when community colleges offer their own baccalaureate degree programs. Utilizing qualitative research methodology, we investigated how executive administrators at two Florida colleges managed this momentous change process and how this transformation has affected their colleges’ day-to-day operations. Our findings shed light on several important themes that emerged in interviews with the administrators: justifying the need for the degree, acquiring state approval and regional accreditation, modifying existing college policies and services, meeting challenges that are inherent in this transition, and developing strategies for leading this institutional transformation. Our goal was to provide a better understanding of this multifaceted organizational change process to help community college stakeholders make educated decisions regarding the introduction of 4-year degree programs at their institutions.
Many cross-sectional studies have been published where the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured in indoor air at one or two locations for houses or offices. This study provides longitudinal data for a commercial retail building and also addresses spatial variability within the building. The data suggest that spatial and temporal variability are important considerations for compounds emitted from indoor sources. Elevated concentrations were found in retail spaces with no apparent emission sources due to their proximity to other retail spaces with emission sources.
The pharmacokinetics of low-dose aspirin and the resulting salicylic acid were studied in 6 healthy volunteers. Each received a single 50-mg dose of (1) oral modified release capsules, (2) oral solution and (3) intravenous solution. The volunteers also received 50 mg modified release capsules daily for 6 days to determine the effect on collagen, ADP and arachidonate induced platelet aggregation and thromboxane production, and to compare the pharmacokinetics after repeated dosing with the parameters obtained after the single dose. The formulation and route of administration profoundly influenced several pharmacokinetic parameters for aspirin: the maximum concentration (Cmax, ng.ml-1) was 221 and 191 after modified release for single and chronic dosing respectively, 1323 after the oral solution and 6000 after intravenous injection; the time to achieve this maximum concentration (tmax, h) was 3.42 and 3.02 after modified release for single and chronic dosing respectively, and 0.29 after the oral solution; the area under the plasma drug concentration versus time curve (AUC, microgram.h.ml-1) was 0.38 and 0.27 after modified release single and chronic dosing respectively, 0.68 after the oral solution and 1.57 after intravenous injection. The elimination of aspirin after the two solutions was at least biphasic. The terminal phase rate constant ranged from 1.52 h-1 after intravenous injection to 1.88 h-1 after the oral modified release form. The absorption of the oral forms of aspirin was complete as reflected by the total recovery of the doses as salicylic acid in urine.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The results indicate that TL increases significant neuronal activity in specific brain regions responsible for reward and locomotor behaviour (fixed-effect analysis); however, there is no significant difference between TL and vehicle-treated groups with random-effect analysis (population statistic). The active compound(s) in TL responsible for the pharmacological effects of TL remain to be identified.
For institutions of higher education with high numbers of enrolled veterans, understanding how these students perceive services specifically designed for them is an important next step in developing effective campus service models. Through analysis of survey data (n=328) collected at a campus with a host of established services and a high number of military connected students, this study adds to the literature on the transition experience and utilization of resources. This investigation focuses on the interaction between prior-military and disability characteristics and how service-connected injuries impact student-veterans' quality of life, integration on campus, and challenges with the built campus environment. Findings are discussed through the lens of a seminal transition framework, with practical application strategies offered for creating and delivering individualized support for student veterans.
