AbsrractEffects of moisture, temperature and available food on the different stages of Desiuntha cauduta, a pest of germinating cereals, were studied. Adults required moisture with food for survival through the summer months and these conditions were shown to be necessary for oviposition. A hypothesis based on adult survival is presented to explain why D. caudata is neither found in cereals sown after fallows nor in successive cereal crops in South Australia.
