A series of 5,7,9-substituted 2-azapyrenes were synthesized for the first time. The synthesis relies on Brønsted acid promoted benzannulation of alkyne precursors prepared by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The synthetic strategy is efficient and the scope covers a variety of functional groups. The electrochemical behavior and photophysical properties of the products were investigated by UV−vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT calculations.

A range of aza-ullazines, which represent a new heterocyclic core structure, were synthesized through a scalable four-step reaction, including a Sonogashira reaction and metal-free cyclization promoted by p-toluenesulfonic acid. The optical and electrochemical properties of selected derivatives were investigated, they were found to have similar absorption and emission spectra but a higher oxidation potential than the parent ullazine core.

Pentaarylpyridines were conveniently prepared in one step by pentafold Suzuki-Miyaura reactions of pentachloropyridine. Moreover, site selective reactions were performed, leading to various substituted arylpyridines. Pentaarylpyridines were studied in detail by means of DFT calculations and by optical spectroscopy.

The palladium‐catalyzed CH activation and arylation of N‐methylpyrrole and N‐phenylpyrrole allowed a convenient synthesis of diarylpyrroles. The reactions were performed by using tetrabutylammonium acetate as an ionic solvent, which allowed for the application of a ligand‐free catalytic system by using simple palladium salts or polyvinylpyrrolidone‐stabilized palladium nanoparticles as the catalyst.

A straightforward method for the synthesis of a series of hitherto unknown 1-azapyrenes is reported, which relies on a combination of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with Brønsted acid-mediated cycloisomerization reactions. The methodology is highly modular and allows an efficient synthesis of various substituted products in high yields. The structural, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of 1-azapyrenes have been studied by ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) and fluorescence spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Hitherto unknown pentaalkynylpyridines have been prepared in high yields by Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions of pentachloropyridine. Their photophysical properties were studied and compared to those of penta- and hexaalkynylbenzenes which were efficiently prepared by the first Sonogashira reactions of pentachlorobenzene and hexachlorobenzene. The pentaalkynylpyridines show promising fluorescence properties because of their high quantum yields.

Various N-fused isoquinoline derivatives were synthesized using a new one-pot reaction of 1-bromo-2-(2,2-difluorovinyl)benzenes with N-H group containing heterocycles followed by intramolecular palladium-catalyzed C-H arylation. The method described gives convenient access to diverse structures of N-fused polycyclic isoquinolines. Sixteen of the synthesized compounds were screened as potential human nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 and 3 (h-NPP-1 and h-NPP-3) inhibitors. The most effective h-NPP-1 inhibitor showed an IC value as high as 0.36 ± 0.06 μM, whereas the most potent h-NPP-3 inhibitor posessed an inhibitory value of 0.48 ± 0.01 μM. Kinetic and molecular docking studies of both most effective inhibitors were carried out.
