The traditional visualization workflow stores simulation data to disk, followed by the post-processing, as an independent analysis and visualization step. The rapid increase of produced simulation results makes postprocessing a significant time-consuming task. In-situ visualization, by coupling simulation and visualization steps, allows data analysis during the simulation, thus eliminating the need to store data. Data movement is considered too inefficient in an exascale system, and thus propose to do the computations locally where the data is created. Access to the simulation data is provided through an interface without loss of flexibility and abstraction. This approach, implemented using raytracing, is demonstrated to lead to a scalable solution with a limited impact on the simulation.
