OBJECTIVE: To present bacteriologic and clinical data on 67 patients from the island of Funen, Denmark, with Shewanella alga, a bacterium rarely seen in Scandinavia, isolated from ear swabs. Included in the study is an examination of the occurrence of S. alga in sea water around the island. METHODS: Bacteriologic examination and antibiotic susceptibility testing of 67 clinical isolates, 11 sea-water isolates and two reference strains were conducted. Clinical information was obtained from the referring physicians. RESULTS: During 6 months S. alga was isolated from 67 patients, in 33 cases in pure culture. Seventy per cent of the patients were children between 3 and 15 years old who had clinical symptoms of acute or chronic otitis media. Previous ear disease was common (76%). Most of the cases (85%) occurred in August or September, and 47 of 55 patients reported contact with sea water shortly before symptoms developed. From seven of the patients, S. alga was isolated more than once. The species was also isolated from five of 10 bathing areas around the island of Funen. CONCLUSIONS: The patients were probably infected with S. alga during sea-water bathing in the unusually warm summer of 1994. Infections with marine bacteria are possible in countries with a temperate climate; patients with previous ear disease are at special risk.

A comparison between conventional identification and 16S rRNA gene sequencing of anaerobic bacteria isolated from blood cultures in a routine setting was performed (n ‫؍‬ 127). With sequencing, 89% were identified to the species level, versus 52% with conventional identification. The times for identification were 1.5 days and 2.8 days, respectively.

Borreliosis is an endemic infection in Denmark. Recent serosurveys have indicated that human anaplasmosis may be equally common. The aim of this study was to look for Anaplasma phagocytophilum and related pathogens in Ixodes ricinus ticks and estimate their prevalence, compared to Borrelia, using PCR. Ticks were collected from three locations in Denmark: Jutland, Funen, and Bornholm. Ticks from Jutland and Funen were analysed individually, ticks from Bornholm were analysed in pools of 20. A. phagocytophilum was found in ticks from all areas. A. phagocytophilum was found in 23.6% of ticks from Jutland and Funen, while 11% were positive for Borrelia burgdorferi. The Borrelia genotype B. afzelii was most prevalent, followed by B. valaisiana, B. burgdorferi s.s. and B. garinii.A. phagocytophilum was found in 14.5% of nymphs and 40.5% of adult ticks, while Borrelia was found in 13% of nymphs and 8% of adult ticks. The difference in prevalence between Anaplasma and Borrelia in adult ticks supports the idea that their maintenance cycles in nature may be different. Ticks were also infected with Rickettsia helvetica. Our study indicates that A. phagocytophilum prevalence in ticks in Denmark is as high as Borrelia prevalence and that human anaplasmosis may be unrecognized.

We examine here the hypothesis that during flowering, the grass pollen concentrations at a specific site reflect the distribution of grass pollen sources within a few kilometres of this site. We perform this analysis on data from a measurement campaign in the city of Aarhus (Denmark) using three pollen traps and by comparing these observations with a novel inventory of grass pollen sources. The source inventory is based on a new methodology developed for urban-scale grass pollen sources. The new methodology is believed to be generally applicable for the European area, as it relies on commonly available remote sensing data combined with management information for local grass areas. The inventory has identified a number of grass pollen source areas present within the city domain. The comparison of the measured pollen concentrations with the inventory shows that the atmospheric concentrations of grass pollen in the urban zone reflect the source areas identified in the inventory, and that the pollen sources that are found to affect the pollen levels are located near or within the city domain. The results also show that during days with peak levels of pollen concentrations there is no correlation between the three urban traps and an operational trap located just 60 km away. This finding suggests that during intense flowering, the grass pollen concentration mirrors the local source distribution and is thus a local-scale phenomenon. Model simulations aimed at assessing population exposure to pollen levels are therefore recommended to take into account both local sources and local atmospheric transport, and not to rely only on describing regional to long-range transport of pollen. The derived pollen source inventory can be entered into local-scale atmospheric transport models in combination with other components that simulate pollen release in order to calculate urban-scale variations in the grass pollen load. The gridded inventory with a resolution of 14 m is therefore made available as supplementary material to this paper, and the verifying grass pollen observations are additionally available in tabular form
