This manuscript is about the study conducted in order to establish the views of students at Kwame Nkrumah University concerning the inclusion of learners with disabilities. Three objectives were administered, and these were to establish the views of students concerning the inclusion of learners with disabilities, to identify the benefits of inclusive education and to determine what should be done to promote inclusive education. The findings were that, there is positive treatment of learners with disabilities and that they are able to learn with others who are not disabled, they need modified curriculum and more resources, the environment is being modified bit by bit. It was also found that, some teaching methods being used are not suitable. Among the benefits realised from inclusive education which were established through the views of students were that, some learning materials are given to learners with disabilities, there is social and academic interaction between learners with and without disabilities, there is positive attitude towards learners with disabilities in inclusive setting, equality and the right to education are being realised. Concerning what has to be done to improve inclusive education students views were that there is need for awareness campaign about inclusive education, more learning materials are needed, modification of existing teaching methods and infrastructure is needed and positive language towards learners with disabilities is required. The semi-structured interview guide was administered when collecting data from fifteen respondents.
This manuscript is an extract of a theoretical framework and conceptual framework from a master’s an on-going study on the challenges which learners with physical disabilities face in schools in Zambia. the frameworks suggests that, among the challenges which learners with physical disabilities face in schools in Zambia are the environmental challenges, attitudinal challenges, institutional challenges and financial challenges. It is argued that if challenges are identified and addressed learners with physical disability can benefit a lot from education system and participate in society on equal basis with others.
This manuscript is a study on special education provision and teacher preparation in universities. The study aimed at establishing the special education provisions in universities, establishing how special teachers are prepared in universities and determine the requirement for learners with disabilities in order not to be left behind. The tools for data collection were the document study, interview schedule and the questionnaire. Data was analyzed using excel sheet and manually. The sample comprised of 30 masters students for special education programme at Kwame Nkrumah University. The findings were that special education provisions incorporated the special child’s needs, national needs, international needs, the university needs, teachers’ needs and technological needs. The study also found that, teachers were prepared by being equipped with knowledge and skills of special education. In order for learners with special needs not to be left behind it was discovered that they needed trained teachers in special education, infrastructure and curriculum modifications, teaching and learning materials and methods tailored to their needs, they needed schools, community, national, international and all stakeholders involvement in their education.
This manuscript is an extract of a theoretical framework and conceptual framework from a Master’s an on-going study on the hurdles learners with visual impairment face academically due to the introduction of inclusive education in two selected secondary schools in Itezhi-tezhi District of Zambia. The work is an attempt to identify the hardles affecting learners with visual impairment in Zambia. Among the factors that can affect these learners are such as attention, materials, financial support, trained teachers, and attitude. It is argued that if these factors are identified and addressed learners with visual impairment can benefit a lot from education under education system.
