Sistemas de controle gerenciais podem receber adaptações e inovações em resposta às variáveis contingenciais externas às organizações. O presente estudo visa verificar se existem relações entre os tipos de sistemas orçamentários e os fatores contingenciais que afetam o setor industrial. As variáveis contingenciais: ambiente, estrutura, estratégia, processo tecnológico e porte foram relacionadas à taxonomia orçamentária, à flexibilidade de mudanças no orçamento e ao processo de elaboração orçamentário. A coleta de dados foi realizada por questionário em 28 indústrias paranaenses. O tratamento dos dados envolveu frequência relativa e correlações canônicas, a fim de quantificar a força da relação entre as variáveis do estudo. O perfil da amostra foi predominantemente de empresas de grande porte e do setor alimentício, que utilizam o orçamento para direcionar os recursos, análise de desempenho e alinhamento com o planejamento estratégico. Os tipos de orçamento flexível e por atividade foram predominantes. Os resultados das correlações canônicas permitem inferir que a ênfase orçamentária em planos operacionais está relacionada à estrutura organizacional descentralizada e processos repetitivos, a ênfase orçamentária em comunicação interna relaciona-se a estratégias de custos e porte da organização, o orçamento contínuo relaciona-se a planos operacionais e processos customizados e as dimensões orçamento flexível e processo base zero relacionam-se a aspectos legais.
