Introdução: A ascaridíase é uma infecção causada pelo verme Ascaris Lumbricoides, o qual habita, principalmente, a região intestinal. Essa parasitose compõe as Helmintíases Transmitidas pelo Solo (STH) por ter como uma das vias de transmissão o contato com material fecal em solo infectado. Nesse contexto, essa infecção se apresenta como uma doença de alta prevalência em países tropicais, sobretudo em desenvolvimento, fazendo-se presente, principalmente, em crianças. Por isso, estratégias farmacológicas foram desenvolvidas para o tratamento da ascaridíase, sendo uma dessas o albendazol, o qual é utilizado pela Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) como fármaco de primeira linha no combate a essa verminose. Objetivos: Analisar os motivos da escolha do albendazol como fármaco de primeira linha nas infecções agudas por Ascaris lumbricoides em crianças. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma busca na base de dados BVS, do tipo revisão bibliográfica, através dos Descritores “Albendazole, Ascariasis e Child”, utilizando como critérios de inclusão artigos publicados no período 2017-2022 e escritos nos idiomas português ou inglês. Dentre os critérios de exclusão, foram descartados os artigos que não apresentavam termos referentes aos descritores no título, juntamente àqueles fora da temática discutida nessa produção. Resultados: Foram analisados 13 artigos, dos quais observou-se que o mebendazol e albendazol são os fármacos que apresentam uma taxa de eficácia mais alta e próximas, com cerca de 91,4% no tratamento de ascaridíase, sendo o albendazol mais observado nos estudos quantitativos para a estratégia de "deworming", a qual a OMS indica para o combate dessa verminose. Além disso, destacou-se que esse medicamento apresenta baixo custo, alta eficácia e efeitos adversos diminuídos, pois possui grande biodisponibilidade oral e velocidade no alcance do seu local de atuação, o que facilita a adesão e a continuidade do tratamento. Ainda, por se tratar de uma formulação com posologia padronizada (400 mg, para adultos e crianças > 2 anos), sua utilização facilita a administração em crianças, podendo ser, inclusive, em dose única. Conclusão: O medicamento albendazol mostra-se como uma importante ferramenta no tratamento e na prevenção da STH, ascaridíase, haja vista características importantes para adesão e massificação do tratamento, sem que este se torne burocrático ou dispendioso.
