Brain hemorrhage is a severe threat to human life, and its timely and correct diagnosis and treatment are of great importance. Multiple types of brain hemorrhage are distinguished depending on the location and character of bleeding. The main division covers five subtypes: subdural, epidural, intraventricular, intraparenchymal, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. This paper presents an approach to detect these intracranial hemorrhage types in computed tomography images of the head. The model trained for each hemorrhage subtype is based on a double-branch convolutional neural network of ResNet-50 architecture. It extracts features from two chromatic representations of the input data: a concatenation of the image normalized in different intensity windows and a stack of three consecutive slices creating a 3D spatial context. The joint feature vector is passed to the classifier to produce the final decision. We tested two tools: the support vector machine and the random forest. The experiments involved 372,556 images from 11,454 CT series of 9997 patients, with each image annotated with labels related to the hemorrhage subtypes. We validated deep networks from both branches of our framework and the model with either of two classifiers under consideration. The obtained results justify the use of a combination of double-source features with the random forest classifier. The system outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of F1 score. The highest detection accuracy was obtained in intraventricular (96.7%) and intraparenchymal hemorrhages (93.3%).

This study presents the first application of convolutional neural networks to high-frequency ultrasound skin image classification. This type of imaging opens up new opportunities in dermatology, showing inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, or skin lesions. We collected a database of 631 images with healthy skin and different skin pathologies to train and assess all stages of the methodology. The proposed framework starts with the segmentation of the epidermal layer using a DeepLab v3+ model with a pre-trained Xception backbone. We employ transfer learning to train the segmentation model for two purposes: to extract the region of interest for classification and to prepare the skin layer map for classification confidence estimation. For classification, we train five models in different input data modes and data augmentation setups. We also introduce a classification confidence level to evaluate the deep model’s reliability. The measure combines our skin layer map with the heatmap produced by the Grad-CAM technique designed to indicate image regions used by the deep model to make a classification decision. Moreover, we propose a multicriteria model evaluation measure to select the optimal model in terms of classification accuracy, confidence, and test dataset size. The experiments described in the paper show that the DenseNet-201 model fed with the extracted region of interest produces the most reliable and accurate results.

In this study an approach to open architecture computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) is presented. The traditional goal of a CAD system, to assist the physicians in performing the diagnosis and treatment, has been extended. The platform also supports the system designer in developing a new CAD workflow by implementing general-purpose modules as well as problem-dependent procedures. A new CAD may require new procedures to be added, yet some of the already implemented functions can be employed. The CAD environment is subjected to the developmental process of three systems: the multiple sclerosis CAD, the lung nodule CAD and the pneumothorax CAD. Modules and procedures are briefly described and the CAD systems are evaluated. Results obtained during the CAD evaluation show prospective flexibility of the infrastructure. The trade-offs, well known to CAD designers, can easily be handled by the operators in a user-friendly manner by choosing various workflow paths.
