The black drum (Pogonias cromis) is an estuarine-dependent fish, (threatened with extinction due to) overexploitation in southern Brazil. In the estuary of Patos Lagoon, the scarcity of data on the biology and fishery species (hinder) the formulation of management plans. This study aims to analyze the artisanal fisheries of the black drum in the estuary of Patos Lagoon, by analyzing CPUE changes and the different compositions of juveniles, adults, males and females landed, relating them to the period of abundance increasing in the region. The fishing effort is the main cause for variations in the abundance of black drum in the estuary of Patos Lagoon, where the largest catches occur inside and outside the breeding season. The composition of landings varies throughout the year, females and adult fish predominate during the reproductive season, during the rest of the year no significant difference between males and females was found, and juveniles are predominant in the landings. The mean age of fish also changed, with higher values in spawning period. We conclude that these fisheries would prevent the recovery of the stock.
Here we present the weight-length relationship of the spinner shark (Carcharhinus brevipinna) on the continental shelf of southern Brazil, estimated from an analysis of 125 specimens. No significant differences between males and females, so the data were grouped in equation W = 0,003L 3.1534 . The results presented here are the first to approach sharks above 75 cm and confirm the positive allometric growth of the species.
The Plectranthus barbatus Andrews (Lamiaceae) is a plant largely used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal and liver diseases. The objective of this work was to study the protective effect of the aqueous extract of P. barbatus (EAPB) against damage caused by iron overload induced by iron dextran in rat liver. Treatment with irondextran induced a significant reduction in the glutathione levels in treated animals compared to control group, and the pretreatment of animals with EAPB protected the liver from the effects caused by iron in this parameter. With respect to lipid peroxidation, a significant increase in the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in treated animals compared to control was observed; however, when the animals were pretreated with EAPB, there was a significant reduction in the MDA levels. Histopathological analysis showed that the group treated with iron-dextran showed iron granules in the cytoplasm of the Kupffer cells and some of them presented enlarged nuclei. The group previously treated with EAPB showed the disappearance of the signs of damage to the Kupffer cells with no nucleus hypertrophy but with the presence of iron granules completely phagocytosed by these cells, which showed a normal morphological appearance. Therefore, the EAPB may be useful in the prevention of liver damage induced by iron overload.
In this study the authors use the Fishers ecological knowledge (FEK) from the south coast of the São Paulo State, in southeastern Brazil, to recover records of Atlantic nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum), a threatened with extinction species, in a mosaic of marine-protected areas (MPAs) of the south coast of São Paulo, in southeastern Brazil, in the southernmost distribution of the species in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. For half a century, in the study area only one male of G. cirratum was officially recorded, in 1967. Retrieving records from artisanal fishers, recreational anglers, fishing guides and spearfishers added 30 more records of G. cirratum, including 2 recent captures (February/2022 and May/2022), especially around coastal islands that are covered by MPAs. Two uncommon fishing techniques, but which provided the highest number of records for the species, were documented. These are
In southern Brazil, we investigated shark and ray capture records in an integral protection marine protection area (MPA) that allows fishing in that area. We found 10 shark and nine ray species, of which 88.5% and 66.2%, respectively, are endangered. Female adults and neonates of both sexes are abundant in the area, with records of stranding of large specimens, postcapture abortions and ovigerous capsules with fresh embryos on the beach. We suggest the application of continuous fisheries monitoring and an increase in guidelines on the capture of endangered species.conservation, elasmobranchs, endangered species, Lagoa do Peixe National Park Coastal regions of southern Brazil are areas with frequent presence of species of sharks, including pregnant females and neonates (de Chelotti & Santos, 2020;Vooren & Klippel, 2005). However, these regions have an intense fishing effort due to recreational fishing from the coast or pier (Motta et al., 2016), artisanal fishing practiced in shallow waters (de Chelotti et al., 2019;Santos et al., 2016) and industrial fishing carried out at greater depths between 50 and 200 m. This makes the coastal region an area with great difficulty in controlling fishing mortality (de Chelotti & Santos, 2020;Vooren & Klippel, 2005).Marine protected areas (MPAs) in the coastal region have an important role, providing a reduction of fishing mortality (Rolim et al., 2019) and, sometimes, overlapping with nursery areas, which are critical for the conservation of these species (Heupel et al., 2019;Vooren & Klippel, 2005). The absence of fishing in MPAs can still con-
