abstract. Geographers have recognized that trade fairs and other temporary spaces function as centers of knowledge, but we have a weak understanding of how fairs are themed spaces, similar to parades, festivals, and built environments, that produce cultural and political meanings. In this article we analyze the morphology, iconography, and performance of a large agricultural fair in Brazil, the Bahia Farm Show, which produces a regional identity of highly productive, leading‐edge, and globally competitive agriculture in a former economic backwater. We discuss the production of themes in terms of power relations, cultural processes, relations with nature, and sociotechnological norms for agriculture. Omissions from the Farm Show indicate tension and accommodation between elites at different geographical scales. Brazil's high‐input, high‐output agriculture relies in part on the meanings that events such as agricultural fairs sustain and reproduce.
Abstract OLD APPLICATIONS AND NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR THE USE OF COMPARATIVE METHOD ON GEOGRAPHICAL STUDIES At present, there is extensive geographical research and publication focusing on the comparison among metropolises, mid-size cities, agricultural zones, and conservation units. In many cases, however, that intellectual output is not preceded by any in-depth methodological discussion, in such way that comparisons are simply made between two or more similar geographical areas. Thus, this paper aims at discussing a few themes concerning the application of the comparative method in Geography. To that end, there will be three main discussion points: (a) a conceptual framework concerning the methodological approach herein, (b) a historiographical review that seeks to establish, in the history of geographical thought, the moments in which the comparative perspective was a concern among science writers; and, at last, (c) an exploratory analysis about the adequacy of using the comparative approach in contemporary geography, taking into consideration the relative complexity of building local technical scientific informational databases. Therefore, the need to understand the relation between the creation of similarity spaces, which are generated within a global logic, and spaces of difference, which result from a local effort to preserve unique characteristics, suggests that the comparative method may play a key role in geographical studies.
Abstract THE TERRITORIAL FORMATION OF THE BAHIA WEST: THE ESTABLISHMENT OF “ALÉM SÃO FRANCISCO” (1827-1985) This writing is intended to understand, from Historical Geography, the main aspects concerning the territorial formation of the West of Bahia, between the years 1827, when the Brazilian imperial government ordered the annexation of the region by the Province of Bahia to the detriment of Pernambuco, and 1985, the date that marked the introduction of techniques induce the agricultural modernization in this region. The main objective of this paper is therefore to identify the agents of production space and territorial dynamics that resulted in the formation of technical means in Western Bahia along the cut-space of 158 years.
