Desde 2006, no Brasil é oficial a inclusão do uso de Práticas Integrativas e Complementares no SUS, através da Política Nacional de Práticas Integrativas e Complementares da Saúde (PNPICs), aprovada pela portaria número 971 de 03/ 05/2006. Práticas Integrativas e Complementares são terapias que têm a sua origem em outras medicinas, como nas medicinas tradicionais e homeopatia. Essas práticas operam com tecnologias leves, normalmente de baixo custo financeiro e por isso também contribuem para redução das desigualdades inter- regionais de acesso aos serviços da medicina moderna existentes no Brasil. Os avanços tecnológicos da medicina moderna tornaram onerosos os seus serviços e aprofundando ainda mais os desafios no acesso por parte da população que reside em determinados locais do país, para essas pessoas muitas vezes a alternativa de cuidado se faz através das receitas e remédios caseiros, frutos dos conhecimentos transmitidos pelas famílias e comunidade em que vivem. O presente artigo, traz uma reflexão sobre a importância das PNICSs para o enfrentamento das desigualdades de acesso aos serviços médicos. Através de um breve relato de experiência sobre o curso de formadores de PICS organizado pela CONTAG (Confederação Nacional dos Trabalhadores na Agricultura) e da UFRB (Universidade Federal do Recôncavo Baiano) para agricultores e agricultoras familiares, e também de pesquisas que tratam do tema.
