A água é um recurso natural essencial para a vida no planeta, seja como componente bioquímico de seres vivos, como meio de vida de várias espécies vegetais e animais, como elemento representativo de valores sociais e culturais e até como fator de produção de vários bens de consumo final e intermediário. No entanto, o aumento crescente da população tem aumentado a demanda por esse bem. Por outro lado, a oferta de água potável se torna cada vez mais escassa para suprir as diversas necessidades da população. Diante desse cenário, torna-se essencial a implementação de metodologias que potencializem o aproveitamento racional da água. Os recursos hídricos são advindos de várias origens naturais, tais como, aquíferos, lençóis freáticos e rios essencialmente para a existência de todos os seres vivos, sendo esse a essencial razão pela que a sociedade esteja se preocupando cada dia mais e mais com a disponibilidade de água potável em nosso planeta. Assim sendo é necessário estudar a formas de reaproveitamento da água advinda da chuva como forma de economia e preservação de água potável. No presente trabalho de pesquisa foi realizado um estudo sobre a viabilidade do aproveitamento de águas das chuvas por todo o país, tendo em consideração as diferenças das precipitações. Assim, para esse propósito, necessitou-se identificar o regime pluviométrico das diferentes capitais brasileiras através do banco de dados do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET), determinar os volumes dos reservatórios de águas pluviais para cada situação e avaliar a influência do regime pluviométrico no potencial para aproveitamento de água de chuva.
