Os índices de desenvolvimento municipais fundamentam a tomada de decisão de gestores públicos para implementação de políticas públicas e direcionamento de recursos. O uso de métodos distintos para composição dos índices pode gerar resultados diferentes, que nortearão os processos decisórios. O objetivo geral foi comparar os índices – IDH-M e IFDM – dos 39 municípios da RMVale e explorar suas variáveis, de maneira a destacar os municípios e sub-regiões que mais se distinguem da média. Para atingir o objetivo proposto, foi utilizado o software SPSS 25, pautando da análise de estatística descritiva, representado por meio de gráficos de dispersão e tabelas para a visualização dos dados de pesquisa analisados por meio da metodologia quantitativa. Os resultados obtidos identificaram pelo menos cinco municípios em cada área do desenvolvimento humano que se destacaram da média tanto para cima, quanto para baixo. De igual modo, foram identificados três sub-regiões mais vulneráveis e duas sub-regiões com boa avaliação de forma geral. Como conclusão, os resultados apontam que identificar sub-regiões vulneráveis e propor solução generalistas constitui uma fragilidade, pois existem municípios muito bem avaliados em regiões vulneráveis, da mesma forma que existem municípios vulneráveis em sub-regiões bem avaliadas, aspectos que devem ser considerados em uma política regional. Resultados mostram, ainda, que devem ser consideradas o estudo isolado das áreas do desenvolvimento humano para identificar as vulnerabilidades e desigualdades de cada área.
