Dynamic of Forest Fragments in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul Abstract:The objective was to analyze the dynamics of forest cover in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, between 1985 and 2014, using Regarding the size of the fragments, there is a decrease in the number of very small (< 5 ha) and small fragments (5 to 10 ha) and an increase in the number of medium (10 to 100 ha) and large fragments (> 100 ha), mainly between 2005 and 2014. The landscape metrics (area, density, size, shape, edge and central area) indicated that the region is very fragmented. However, it is undergoing a process of forest regeneration, which is a result of the creation of laws and public policies that promote the preservation and planting of forests as well as a consequence of demographic dynamics.
RESUMOEste trabalho analisou a relação entre índices de vegetação e precipitação, no Parque Estadual do Turvo (PET), localizado no noroeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul (RS Palavras-chave: sensoriamento remoto, séries temporais, chuva, resiliência. Dynamics of the Forest from the 'Parque Estadual do Turvo'with Vegetation Indices ABSTRACTIn this study, we evaluated the relation between vegetation indices and rainfall in the 'Parque Estadual do Turvo' (PET), located in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) were determined from images of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS/ Terra). Rainfall data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) allowed the calculation of the dry spell index. Data analysis showed that nine months presented rainfall below the average; 92 months had rainfall close to the average; and 50 months presented rainfall above the average. The annual cycles of NDVI and EVI did not present conclusive correlation with the abnormal rainfall data, showing that the forest is resilient to short dry periods. The NDVI showed more stability in the summer and winter.
A B S T R A C TMonitoring the dynamics of land use and land cover in indigenous lands is fundamental to assessing the sustainability of the resident indigenous population. Thus, the objective consisted in the space-time study of the Indigenous Land of Guarita (TIG) with the use of satellite images. TM / Landsat 5 sensor images were used to map the land use and cover in the forest, agriculture / field and shade / water classes. For this, two classifiers were used: Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The 16-day Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) / Terra composition data were used for the intra-annual assessment of five TIG sectors: south, north, west, east, and central. The results showed that both classifiers returned similar area quantifications for each class. The forest class presented the highest area (64.9% and 66.77% - SAM and SVM, respectively), followed by agriculture / field (27.78% and 25.4%) and shade / water (7.32% and 7.83%). There was alternation between increase and decrease of the forest class area every five years, possibly due to the opening of new areas, and abandonment of areas. In the intra-annual analysis from 2000 to 2016, the presence of deciduous was observed in the native forest area. When evaluated by sectors, the TIG presented areas with different index patterns. In the southern and western sectors vegetation indexes (especially the Enhanced Vegetation Index - EVI) presented lower values and the presence of annual cycles. In the northern, eastern and central sectors, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) better addressed the annual variations of the forest. Keywords: images, sattelite, mapping, Landsat, MODIS, forest.
Among the consequences of the current dynamics of manmade land use and cover, forest fragmentation results in a large number of isolated fragments of different sizes. Forest provides many environmental services such as carbon sequestration and storage in the form of biomass, demonstrating the crucial role of native forests and the need to develop new methods that estimate forest biomass and carbon by non-destructive methods. This work aimed to develop a methodology to study and estimate the dynamics of forest biomass and carbon stock in successive stages of regeneration in the northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul, which was the study area. Yearly images from 1985 to 2014 of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index -NDVI were calculated, and a global regression was archived to obtain the leaf area index (LAI) and estimate the forest biomass. It was possible to observe the good relationship between the increase in LAI as a function of the NDVI, estimating the forest biomass of 61,156 Gg in 2014, where 602 Gg correspond to the initial regeneration stage, 8,287 Gg for the medium stage, and 52,267 Gg for the advanced stage of regeneration. The total estimated carbon for the study area in 2014 was 27,520 Gg CO2 of which 271 Gg were present in the initial stage, 3,729 Gg in the medium stage, and 23,520 Gg in the advanced stage of regeneration.
