There have been relatively few attempts to quantitatively describe behaviours in scincid lizards. Chalcides viridanus is a small body-sized skink endemic of Tenerife (Canary Islands). We describe and quantify 18 behaviour patterns (both social and agonistic) of this species, some of which have not been described before for other scincids. Video recordings of male-male, female-female, and malefemale interactions were made under laboratory conditions, with controlled light-dark cycle and temperature. We describe several agonistic and courtship behaviour patterns. Within the first context, we detected a new agonistic behaviour for a scincid, "Snout to body", that appeared at the beginning of agonistic sequences; it consisted of each animal placing its snout in contact with the other individual's lateral side of the body. The amplitude of head movement during "Head bobbing" was lower than that described for many other lizard species. Agonistic behaviours were shown in intrasexual staged encounters both within males and females. The comparison of behaviour patterns of both types of intrasexual encounters showed that females were more active, exhibiting significantly higher frequencies of behaviour than males. Specifically, females showed the "Snout to body" pattern more frequently than males. In male-female encounters we detected courtship and copulation patterns only in April, when males performed "Bites" and "Snout to body" directed at females.
The management of socially complex species in captivity is challenging. Research on their social behavior improves our understanding of interactions in captive animals and captive‐group management. We conducted a detailed analysis of social relationships shown by the orcas kept at Loro Parque zoo and their tendency to reconcile after aggressive episodes. Affiliative interactions were the most frequent social activities compared to agonistic or sexual interactions. Within affiliative behaviors, we documented the pattern “gentle tongue bite”, where an animal touches the other's tongue with his teeth but does not bite it. Affiliative interactions between a specific pair of orcas occurred significantly more often than expected by chance, and together with low levels of agonistic interactions, indicated particular affinity between some individuals. The most frequently observed low‐level agonistic relationship was that of the two older males (Tekoa–Keto); however, they also showed frequent sexual and affiliative interactions. Sexual‐like behaviors (pursuit, mount, and penis between males) were found in both sexes. Finally, the observed corrected conciliatory tendency (31.57%) was within the range described for other primate and cetacean species. This study provides a systematic way to assess social interactions as well as conflict management strategies in cetaceans housed in zoos and zoo‐like facilities and may help to improve animal welfare and management of animals in controlled environments.
Morphological and behavioural traits influence contest development and outcome. We analysed morphological and behavioural traits in male and female staged contests of Chalcides viridanus along breeding time. There was no significant difference in any morphologic trait for winner and looser male contenders; larger hind-limbs and heads were significantly associated to winner females. ‘Approach’ was positively while ‘flee’ negatively associated to winner males. ‘Tongue-flick’ and ’approach’ were positively associated to female winners and ‘flee’ to losers. Contest intensity was higher in male than in female contests. For males it was higher in May than in March or April but for females in April and May than in March. Contest intensity was positively related to head width in loser males, suggesting fitting to a pure self-assessment model. For females there was no significant association. For the first time we have shown that skink female contests are as complex as those of males.
Individuals avoid potential competitors accessing mates during reproductive periods staying close to the mate and chasing same-sex intruders. We studied intersexual relationships and the effect of intruders of each sex in male-female pairs of Chalcides viridanus. We analysed: (1) behaviour patterns of each pair member and the time they spent together during three successive days in March, April and May; and (2) interactions of intruder-resident of the same sex, during each of the three months. Sexual and monthly differences appeared in intersexual behaviour as the breeding season progressed. In each month, time together was significantly larger on the third trial day than in the two previous days but did not significantly change between months. Sexes did not significantly differ in intruder-resident behaviours, but male aggressive interactions were significantly larger in May. Intruder females performed higher frequencies of non-agonistic behaviours than residents. We discuss all these results considering the predictions of mate guarding hypothesis.
