A partir de discussões sobre a situação das mulheres nas artes, promovidas por Linda Nochlin, Audre Lorde, entre outros autores, o presente texto busca investigar o espaço de criação da artista estadunidense Joan Jonas com base nas camadas urbanas e histórico-sociais que atravessam suas obras no início dos anos 1970. Os contextos de suas performances são aqui acentuados, pois são vistos como geradores da integração entre o lugar da experiência artística e os espaços públicos. Através de análises comparadas, espera-se traçar aproximações e diferenciações entre as questões relacionadas e a especificidade do lugar da obra, na medida em que o trabalho de Jonas mobiliza distanciamentos, embaralhamentos do olhar e outras atmosferas de percepção.
Este ensaio está centrado na análise de obras performativas realizadas na década de 1970 pelas artistas brasileiras Iole de Freitas, Letícia Parente e Sonia Andrade. Ao transformar seus espaços de habitação em lugares de criação e experimentação artística, desafiam a separação moderna entre público e privado, assim como as definições sociais de gênero envolvidas nessa distinção. De modo expressivo e urgente, o uso que fazem dos aparatos fotográficos e videográficos revela experiências que envolvem seus corpos e a situação política do país.
