Carbonated soybean oil was synthesized from epoxidized soybean oil and CO 2 at atmospheric pressure and with tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr) as catalyst. Kinetic parameters, i.e., rate constants, activation energy and pre-exponential factors were determined. The effects of catalyst concentration and water content were studied. The reaction followed first-order kinetics with respect to epoxide at 100-140°C. A steep increase in conversion (ca. 30 %) was obtained by increasing the amount of catalyst from 3 to 5 %. Further increasing the amount of catalyst to 7 % increased the conversion less than 10 %. The reaction proceeded faster when water was added; reaction times with water were ca. 70 % of the reaction times without water. Titration, FTIR and 1 H-NMR analyses indicated ca. 90 % conversion and ca. 88 % selectivity towards the carbonate after 70 h at 120°C with 5 % mol TBABr and 1:3 molar ratio of water to epoxide.
The transesterification of castor oil with maleic anhydride was studied using conventional and microwave heating. Reactions were followed by measuring the acid value and the reaction products were characterized by FTIR and 1 H NMR. A kinetic model that fit the experimental data was derived. The transesterification was noncatalytic and first-order with respect to each reactant. Nonthermal effects of microwaves were not observed. Activation energy, enthalpy of activation, entropy of activation and free energy of activation were similar regardless of the heating method. Rate constants and the pre-exponential factor were lower with the use of microwave heating, which could be a consequence of the decrease in the dielectric constant of the reaction liquid as the reaction progresses.
Flexible Polyurethane Foam Synthesis and Characterization Obtained from Maleinizated Castor OilAbstract: In this work, the synthesis of polyurethane flexible foam is realized with the experimental design Taguchi, using castor oil with and without maleinization. The kinetic reaction of oil esterification was monitored by estimating the number of acid groups (ASTM D4662 -03), and the mechanical properties of the foam were studied, including density, tensile resistance, % elongation, resilience and hardness (Norm NTC 2019 Icontec). The influence of various synthesis parameters was investigated, namely amount and type of catalyst, molar ratio of castor oil (CO) -male...
Synthesis and Characterization of Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives of Waterborne Polyurethane from Maleinizated Castor OilAbstract: This work focused on the production of aqueous dispersions of polyurethane using the emulsification method by phase inversion. For the synthesis two polyols were employed, viz. a commercial polyester and Maleinizated Castor Oil (MACO), with two diisocyanates: one aromatic, toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and another aliphatic, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), which are not common for this application. Citric acid was used as internal emulsifier which is inexpensive and readily available. The parameters were the amount of citric acid and the mole ratio of isocyanate groups to hydroxyl (NCO/OH), generating a 3 2 factorial design, with minimization of the sedimented solids. The surface methodology was used to obtain a quadratic polynomial equation by multiple regression analysis. Polyurethanes synthesized were evaluated for their mechanical and adhesive properties (tack, loop tack, hold, peel). These measurements allowed classifying the polyurethanes synthesized as repositionable adhesives, for use in labels.
Synthesis of Poly Lactic Acid and Poly Ricinoleate Using Microwave Heating and Their Use in the Production of Polyurethane ThermoplasticAbstract: In this paper we report on the synthesis of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) using oligomers synthesized from DL Lactic acid and ricinoleic acid. These polyols were obtained from renewable sources by polycondensation of monomers without catalysts. The effect of microwaves on the reactions was evaluated, where non-thermal effects were found to lower the activation energy and increase the rate constant in a third-order kinetics. The monitoring and characterization of intermediate products was done by quantification of acid value by titration (ASTM D4662 -03) and hydroxyl number (ASTM D4274 -05). Thermoplastics obtained are characterized by the following tests: tensile strength and elongation percentage (ASTM D882-97), analysis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). TPU was obtained with a percentage of 50% soft segments, all have segmented morphology and segregation of phases. The formulations with poly(DL lactic acid) and Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) have the highest stiffness and glass transition temperature (Tg). Keywords: Thermoplastic polyurethane, poly(DL lactic acid), polyricinoleate.
