Le caractère non lucratif de l’associatif et son mode de financement (non marchand, c’est-à-dire financé principalement par l’impôt et/ou les cotisations de ses membres, et non par le marché) sont fréquemment évoqués pour le différencier du monde des entreprises privées et affirmer que l’on peut “y travailler autrement”. Les associations seraient plus bienveillantes envers les salariés, en promouvant notamment des relations de travail plus démocratiques, plus égalitaires. L’objectif de cet article est de montrer, au travers entre autres de données statistiques disponibles, que l’associatif n’échappe pas aux inégalités : inégalités entre hommes et femmes, entre les fonctions, entre hautes et basses qualifications, entre salariés de petites ou de grandes associations, etc. Malgré ce constat, il faut néanmoins résister à l’idée de nier tout caractère particulier à la réalité du travail salarié dans l’associatif. Les salariés cherchent sans doute à y “travailler autrement”. Face à cela, l’associatif ne manque pas complètement à sa promesse. Il permet, là plus qu’ailleurs sans doute, particulièrement dans les associations de petite taille, aux travailleurs de s’épanouir professionnellement, malgré les inégalités constatées.
