Summary Ribes (currants and gooseberries) are telial hosts for the introduced and invasive white pine blister rust fungus, Cronartium ribicola. Knowledge of wild and introduced Ribes helps us understand the epidemiology of blister rust on its aecial hosts, white pines, and develop disease control and management strategies. Ribes differ by species in their contribution to initial establishment and subsequent intensification of blister rust. Their significance to pine infection depends on their inherent capacities to become infected and support spore production, their abundance and environmental interactions. Ribes and white pines are adapted to disturbance and frequently co‐occur in forest and woodland ecosystems. Differences in light and moisture requirements affect how long various species of Ribes occupy a site. Natural or artificial selection increases rust resistance in white pines, Ribes, and other host genera; but selection also affects virulence and aggressiveness of C. ribicola. Blister rust pathosystems evolve. Local pathosystems wherein the rust and its hosts coexist with reduced damage could arise by several processes.

White pine blister rust disease, caused by the introduced pathogen Cronartium ribicola, has severely disrupted five-needled pine ecosystems in North America. A 100-year effort to manage this disease was predicated in part on the premise that the pathogen utilizes only species of Ribes (Grossulariaceae) as alternate hosts on this continent. The current study presents the first conclusive demonstration that some species in the family Orobanchaceae (Pedicularis racemosa and Castilleja miniata) are functioning as alternate hosts in a natural ecosystem of North America. This finding has implications for improving our understanding of epidemiology, pathogen adaptation and host-pathogen interactions within white pine blister rust.

Symptoms of decline have been observed on dying coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) trees in areas throughout southern California that are both infested and uninfested by the gold-spotted oak borer (GSOB). The purpose of this study was to identify and assess the pathogenicity of several anamorph species of the Botryosphaeriaceae, including Diplodia corticola, Dothiorella iberica and Diplodia agrifolia sp. nov., that were recovered consistently from symptomatic tissues. Species were identified morphologically and by phylogenetic analyses of the complete sequence of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the rDNA and partial sequences of β-tubulin and elongation factor (EF1-α) genes. Results from morphological assessments and phylogenetic analyses support the erection of a new species closely related to D. mutila, described herein as Diplodia agrifolia sp. nov. Pathogenicity of all species was verified by wound inoculation of 1 y old coast live oak seedlings under controlled conditions. Isolates of D. corticola were the most aggressive tested, and isolates of D. agrifolia were the second most aggressive. Both species caused bleeding symptoms on inoculated seedlings. Seedlings inoculated with D. corticola died within 4 wk, with the pathogen progressing up and down through the xylem in advance of living phloem and moving throughout the taproot in 70% of inoculated seedlings. Colonization and re-isolation was successful for all species. All three fungal species represent newly recorded fungal pathogens of coast live oak in California. Results from the pathogenicity test suggest that these fungi play a role in the decline of coast live oaks throughout southern California.

White pine blister rust, Cronartium ribicola, has plagued the forests of North America for almost a century. Over past decades, eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) that appear to tolerate the disease have been selected and incorporated into breeding programs. Seeds from P. strobus with putative resistance were collected from Oconto River Seed Orchard, Nicolet National Forest, WI. Seedlings were grown for 5 months and artificially inoculated with basidiospores of C. ribicola in two replicated greenhouse experiments. Needles from infected seedlings were fixed, sectioned, and stained with a variety of histological reagents, and rate of mortality for the remaining seedlings was monitored. The most susceptible families suffered 50% mortality in approximately half the time of the more resistant families. Extensive inter- and intracellular hyphae were observed in needles from seedlings of susceptible families, whereas hyphal proliferation was restricted in needles of resistant seedlings. Needles from resistant families had pronounced responses to infection. Phenolics, observed with phloroglucinol-HCl staining, were deposited around infection sites where dense mycelial masses were present. Abnormal host cell growth and rapid cell death in the immediate area of infection were also observed in some eastern white pine families.

Two strains of the wheat stem rust fungus, Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici, were crossed on barberry, and a single F(1) progeny strain was selfed. The parents, F(1), and 81 F(2) progeny were examined for virulence phenotypes on wheat differential cultivars carrying stem rust resistance (Sr) genes. For eight Sr differentials, phenotypic ratios are suggestive of single dominant avirulence genes AvrT6, AvrT8a, AvrT9a, AvrT10, AvrT21, AvrT28, AvrT30, and AvrTU. Avirulence on the Sr; (Sr 'fleck') differential showed phenotypic ratios of approximately 15:1, indicating epistatic interaction of two genes dominant for avirulence. Avirulence on Sr9d favored a 3:13 over a 1:3 ratio, possibly indicating two segregating genes-one dominant for avirulence and one dominant for avirulence inhibition. Linkage analysis of eight single dominant avirulence genes and 970 DNA markers identified DNA markers linked to each of these avirulence genes. The closest linkages between AvrT genes and DNA markers were between AvrT6 and the random amplified polymorphic DNA marker crl34-155 (6 centimorgans [cM]) AvrT8a and the amplified fragment length polymorphism marker eAC/mCT-197 (6 cM) and between AvrT9a and the amplified fragment length polymorphism marker eAC/mCT-184 (6 cM). AvrT10 and AvrTU are linked at distance of 9 cM.
