Lumber grade yields and recovery ratios obtained for old-growth Douglas-fir logs are presented for two log scaling and grading practices. The logs were bucked from trees selected from commercial sawtimber stands throughout the west-side Douglas-fir region. The lumber yield information is presented for 2 3 980 woods-length logs scaled by Forest Service west-side log scaling rules. The lumber yield information is also presented for 4 3 974 sawn-length logs essentially scaled by Forest Service east-side log scaling rules.
Veneer grade and cubic volume recovery values are reported for 10 combined studies made at Washington, Oregon, and California plywood mills. Grade yield on over 3, 000 peeler blocks and approximately 2 million square feet of veneer, 3/8-inch basis, was tallied. Grades A and B veneer accounted for 30.4 percent of the recovery from all blocks; grade C, 26.5 percent; and grade D, 43. 1 percent. A total of 52. 67 percent of the total, cubic-block volume was recovered as dry, untrimmed veneer. Average recovery ratio was 2.71 based on net block scale and dry, untrimmed veneer recovery.
Water supply systems, like the communities they serve, are rarely static. They grow, they age and over time their components may wear out, break down, or be made obsolete by advancing technology. The distribution network is especially vulnerable, but needed replacement must compete with other system demands on available capital. The Los Angeles Dept. of Water and Power has tackled the problem with the aid of a computer data base that inventories and analyzes distribution facilities, generating the solid information needed to formulate a sound long-range main replacement program.
Veneer grade recovery by log diameter class and log grade for ponderosa pine is presented from 236 Black Hills ponderosa pine logs. Log diameters ranged from 7 to 18 inches. Average veneer recovery was 3 percent in grades A and B 3 44 percent in grade C 3 and 53 percent in grade D.
