Over the past several decades, many acoustic markers have been proposed to be sensitive to and measure overall voice quality. This meta-analysis presents a retrospective appraisal of scientific reports, which evaluated the relation between perceived overall voice quality and several acoustic-phonetic correlates. Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria and were evaluated using meta-analytic techniques. Correlation coefficients between perceptual judgments and acoustic measures were computed. Where more than one correlation coefficient for a specific acoustic marker was available, a weighted average correlation coefficient was calculated. This was the case in 36 acoustic measures on sustained vowels and in 3 measures on continuous speech. Acoustic measures were ranked according to the strength of the correlation with perceptual voice quality ratings. Acoustic markers with more than one correlation value available in literature and yielding a homogeneous weighted r of 0.60 or above were considered to be superior. The meta-analysis identified four measures that met these criteria in sustained vowels and three measures in continuous speech. Although acoustic measures are routinely utilized in clinical voice examinations, the results of this meta-analysis suggest that caution is warranted regarding the concurrent validity and thus the clinical utility of many of these measures.
The purpose of this controlled study was to determine the impact of a single-tooth implant, fixed implant prosthesis and completely removable dental prosthesis on intelligibility, articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour. Additionally, the self-perceived overall satisfaction of the dental replacements and the effect on speech was questioned. Objective (acoustic analysis) as well as subjective assessment techniques (perceptual evaluation) were used. The satisfaction of single-tooth implant group was very high (100%) followed by a satisfaction of 87% for the fixed implant prosthesis group and 68% for the removable prosthesis group. The results of the phonetic analyses revealed a normal intelligibility and oromyofunctional behaviour in the three groups of dental replacements. Only one type of articulation disorders was observed in the single-tooth implant group, followed by three types of disorders in the removable prosthesis group and six types of disorders in the fixed implant prosthesis group. In this last group, not only 87% of the subjects showed distortions of one or more consonants but also most consonants of the Dutch language were disturbed in comparison with the single-tooth implant and removable prosthesis users. Special attention must be paid to the fricative /s/ because in more than 50% of all groups, this sound is disturbed.
The main goal of this study was to assess the prevalence and characteristics of tinnitus among students after exposure to leisure noise. In addition, the effects of tinnitus on otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) in participants suffering from chronic tinnitus were evaluated. The study consisted of two parts. First, a questionnaire regarding leisure noise exposure and tinnitus was completed. Second, the hearing status of the subjects suffering from chronic tinnitus was evaluated and compared with a matched control group (CG). Furthermore, the psychoacoustical characteristics of their tinnitus in the chronic tinnitus group (TG) were established. The questionnaire was answered by 151 respondents. Seven persons suffering from chronic tinnitus were examined further in the second part of the study. Transient tinnitus was observed in 73.5% of the respondents after leisure noise exposure and 6.6% experienced chronic tinnitus. Transient and chronic tinnitus had similar characteristics, as established by the questionnaire. The amplitude of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions and distortion product otoacoustic emissions was reduced and the amount of efferent suppression was smaller in the TG as compared with the CG. Tinnitus induced by leisure noise is observed frequently in young adults. The characteristics of tinnitus cannot predict whether it will have a transient or rather a chronic nature. In subjects suffering from tinnitus, subclinical damage that cannot be detected by audiometry can be demonstrated by measuring OAEs. These findings underpin the importance of educating youth about the risks of noise exposure during leisure activities.
This study was a first exploration of listening effort from young to older adults and showed that, independent of hearing sensitivity, listening effort increases with age. To be more specific, there is a need to further investigate the cognitive functions important for speech communication while exploring their possible relationship with listening effort.
There is still controversy regarding the effects of aging on the amplitude of evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs), as well as on the efferent system measured by contralateral acoustic stimulation of EOAEs. The purpose of this study was to investigate EOAEs and efferent suppression (ES) with increasing age.Seventy-one ears (20-79 years) were included in the study, 47 of which had normal hearing thresholds, and 24 ears had a sensorineural high-frequency hearing loss caused by presbycusis. The effects of aging on transient evoked (TEOAEs) and distortion product OAEs (DPOAEs), and on ES were evaluated using multiple regression and correlation coefficients. EOAE amplitudes were more strongly correlated with age, than with pure-tone thresholds (PTTs). Moreover, the increase in the amount of variance explained by the regression model using these variables as predictors was larger for PTTs as compared to the variable age.Similar results were found for ES.There might be an age-dependent decline in EOAEs and ES independent from the influence of deteriorating hearing thresholds although the latter superimpose on the effects of age. The relative contribution of age and hearing thresholds on EOAEs, as well as on ES is important for their interpretation in clinical settings.
Background/Aims: Frequency and amplitude perturbations are inherent in voice acoustic signals. The assessment of voice perturbation is influenced by several factors, including the type of recording equipment used and the measurement extraction algorithm applied. In the present study, perturbation measures provided by two computer systems (a purpose-built professional voice analysis apparatus and a personal computer-based system for acoustic voice assessment) and two computer programs (Multi-Dimensional Voice Program and Praat) were compared. Methods: Correlations and inferential statistics for seven perturbation measures (absolute jitter, percent jitter, relative average perturbation, pitch perturbation quotient, shimmer in decibels, percent shimmer, and amplitude perturbation quotient) in 50 subjects with various voice disorders are presented. Results: Results indicate statistically significant differences between the two systems and programs, with the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program yielding consistently higher measures than Praat. Furthermore, correlation analyses show weak to moderate proportional relationships between the two systems and weak to strong proportional relationships between the two programs. Conclusion: Based on the literature and the proportional relationships and differences between the two systems and programs under consideration in this study, one can state that one can hardly compare frequency perturbation outcomes across systems and programs and amplitude perturbation outcomes across systems.
