Waterborne transport is the cheapest, the safest and the least harmful to the natural environment. Restoring regular waterway cargo transport will require revitalisation of the existing transshipment and logistics infrastructure for commercial inland ports and building new. Transport policy makers must remember that waterborne transport is the most ecological type of transport. It produces only 10% of the gases emitted to the atmosphere by equivalent road transport. Its energy intensity constitutes 30% of the energy intensity of road transport. This article addresses the issues related to inland navigation on the lower Vistula, presenting the river as a waterway, along with its quality and general conditions for navigation. It describes the arrangement and condition of water infrastructure, with particular focus on river ports and the inland waterway fleet.
The article presents the Żuławy Access Railway and the effect of its revitalization on the change of navigational conditions in the Vistula delta. One of the problems analyzed in the article is the intersection of two different transport branches - the inland waterway and rail transport branches. A solution to the problem of their functioning is presented, without any major restrictions. Possible changes in navigational conditions have been described on Martwa Wisła and Przekop Wisły after revitalization of a narrow-gauge railway. The aim of the work is to indicate the optimal solution, taking into account the needs, benefits and possible limitations, and the method of their leveling. The current conditions prevailing in the Vistula delta have been described, obstacles and navigational difficulties, as well as the intensity of unit traffic have been characterized.
The article presents an analysis of the changeability of traffic intensity of inland waterway vessels in the Vistula Delta. The concept of traffic intensity was defined, traffic flows and disturbances were identified in the studied area. The characteristics of the inland waterway traffic model are presented. The results of the analysis indicate the need to carry out modernization of inland waterways for the needs of inland waterway transport: introduction of a traffic control system, unification of the navigational marking system and strict correlation of renovation/modernization works of hydrotechnical structures with a navigation period.
Spatial planning, taking into account the configuration of the surface, i.e. its shape (relief) and the presence and mutual location of objects and points of characteristic water ports, is a derivative of several natural, economic, market, technical, social and political factors. It depends on the destination port, the planned structure of trade in cargo, the forecasted traffic of ships, passageways, the technology of reloading used, as well as on the anticipated demand for the development of shipping and trade by sea and inland waterway. The article analyzes the transport accessibility of the Port of Gdynia through the construction of a dock to determine the proposals for improving the conditions of transported cargo.
Spatial planning is a derivative of several environmental, economic, market, technical, social, and political factors. In spatial planning of inland water ports, the configuration of the land surface, i.e., its shape (relief), and the presence and mutual location of objects and points of characteristic water ports are assumed as the main factors. Also, the port's planning, the planned structure of trade in goods, forecasted ship traffic, communication routes, applicable transshipment technology, and the anticipated demand for the development of shipping and inland waterway trade are of great importance in spatial planning and location.
The article describes the criteria of logistic conditions for planning the inland port's location and transport accessibility in the lower section of the Vistula River. The intensity of vessel traffic, port spatial planning, and economic assessment were assessed.
