Die vorliegende Veröffentlichung fasst Beiträge zum Workshop desselben Titels zusammen, der am 16. und 17. Juli 2008 in Göttingen stattfand. Organisiert wurde er durch das Göttinger Graduiertenkolleg "Interdisziplinäre Umweltgeschichte". Der Ursprung dieses Workshops ging zurück auf einen früheren, der im März 2007 im Graduiertenkolleg zum Thema "Umweltgeschichte-Akademische Professionalisierung und Berufsfelder" durchführt wurde. Dort diskutierten Vertreter von Umwelteinrichtungen und Körperschaften der Politikberatung mit den Kollegiaten 1 über deren Möglichkeiten, ihre Expertise, und damit sich selbst, zielgerichtet in die Berufswelt einzubringen. Der vormalige Präsident des Niedersächsischen Landesamtes für Ökologie, Meinfried Striegnitz, warf die provokante Frage auf, warum denn auf der Seite der Umwelt-und Politikberater das Bewusstsein für umwelthistorische Problemanalysen praktisch fehle. Die sich anschließende Diskussion spitzte die Frage sinngemäß auf die Formulierung zu "Welche Relevanz hat die Umweltgeschichte?" Die teilnehmenden Vertreter der Bundesstiftung Umwelt und der Volkswagenstiftung signalisierten spontan die Bereitschaft ihrer Einrichtungen, zu diesem Thema eine Anschluss-Tagung zu fördern. Sie ließen sich in der Zeit der auslaufenden Förderung der ersten Kollegiaten-Kohorte nicht mehr realisieren. Einige Kollegiaten waren zudem skeptisch, ob die Frage der gesellschaftlichen Relevanz für ihre eigene Forschungsarbeit Bedeutung habe, weil sich
Das vorliegende Buch ist eine komprimierte Version meiner Dissertation, bei der mich viele Kollegen und Freunde unterstützt haben. Als wichtiger Ratgeber ist zunächst Manfred Jakubowski-Tiessen zu nennen, der es mir durch seine zugängliche Art und die angenehme Atmosphäre in seinem Forschungskolloquium leicht machte, ein besseres Verständnis für die historische Wissenschaft zu entwickeln. Sowohl wissenschaftlichen wie auch persönlichen Beistand erhielt ich im Graduiertenkolleg Umweltgeschichte. Besonders danke ich Manuela Armenat für die Versorgung mit Fachwissen und schwer zugänglicher Literatur; Carsten Stühring dafür, dass er immer dann, wenn die Fantasie mit mir durchging, mich mit einem kühlen Kopf zurück auf den rechten Weg brachte; Jens Potschka und Jana Sprenger für wertvolle Unterstützung bei der Endbearbeitung; sowie last but not least Lars Kreye und dem Umwelthistorischen Lesekreis für eine gewinnbringende Horizonterweiterung durch die Lektüre von modernen Klassikern. Die großzügige Finanzierung durch die DFG ermöglichte nicht nur ein sorgenfreies Arbeiten, sondern schuf auch die Möglichkeit an Fachtagungen und Kongressen im In-und Ausland teilzunehmen. Für offenen wissenschaftlichen Austausch bin ich insbesondere Uwe Lübken und Christof Mauch (Rachel Carson Center) zu Dank verpflichtet. Die erfolgreiche Fertigstellung der Arbeit in den letzten Monaten wurde durch ein Überbrückungsstipendium der Graduiertenschule für Geisteswissenschaften Göttingen (GSGG) gewährleistet. Die Veröffentlichung im Universitätsverlag Göttingen verdankt sich der Initiative von Margo Bargheer und Jutta Pabst, mit denen die Zusammenarbeit stets ein Vergnügen war. Zu guter Letzt sei allen Archivaren und Bibliothekaren gedankt, die bei der Erhebung von Materialien unbezahlbare Dienste leisteten. Widmen möchte ich dieses Buch meinen Eltern.
