Du point de vue épistémologique, la notion de seuil et la question des seuils surgit dans la rupture, une posture heuristique de franchissement et d'affranchissement qui s'impose dans les sciences au XXe siècle, dans le même temps où de nouvelles disciplines surgissent de nécessités de terrain et de contraintes méthodologiques, questionnant par là-même les champs d'épistémé. En nous interrogeant sur la façon dont les notions liées de «niveau» et de «seuil» se construisent et circulent dans les discours sociaux sur les langues et au nom de la didactique des langues et des cultures, on peut comprendre le rôle qu'elles y jouent, en particulier dans une élaboration à la fois pragmatique et politique des représentations d'une langue standard quasiment fixe comme cible d'apprentissage et comme objectif d'enseignement. Il faut attendre un mouvement de reconstruction des observables dynamiques et des pratiques d'enseignement à partir de l'observation des espaces d'interlocution, de l'entre-les-langues et du lien dialogal par la convocation de la sociolinguistique, pour replacer ces notions dans une perspective dynamique, une limite illimitée.
