The purpose of the present study was to analyse the arousing effects of noise on sleep inertia as a function of circadian placement of a one-hour nap. In a first experiment, we measured the effects of sleep inertia in a neutral acoustic environment after a one-hour nap placed either at 0100 or 0400 on response time during a spatial memory test. In a second experiment were analysed the effects of an intense continuous noise on sleep inertia. The results showed that noise produced a total abolition of sleep inertia after an early nap (0000 to 0100). This may be due to the arousing effect of noise; however, results are less clear after a late nap 0300 to 0400 as noise seems to be ineffective. This result is discussed in terms of either a function of time-of-day effect or of prior sleep intensity. Moreover, our data suggest a possible interaction of noise with partial sleep deprivation leading to a slight deleterious effect those subjects who did not sleep at all.
The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in free-ranging chickens (Gallus domesticus) is a good indicator of the prevalence of the parasite's oocysts in soil because chicken feed from the ground. The prevalence of T. gondii in free-range chickens from Ghana, Indonesia, Italy, Poland, and Vietnam was determined using the modified agglutination test (MAT). Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 41 (64%) of 64 chickens from Ghana, 24 (24.4%) of 98 chickens from Indonesia, 10 (12.5%) of 80 chickens from Italy, 6 (30%) of 20 chickens from Poland, and 81 (24.2%) of 330 chickens from Vietnam. Hearts and brains of chickens were bioassayed for T. gondii. Viable T. gondii was isolated from 2 chickens from Ghana, 1 chicken from Indonesia, 3 chickens from Italy, 2 chickens from Poland, and 1 chicken from Vietnam. Toxoplasma gondii isolates from 9 chickens were genotyped using 10 PCR-RFLP markers including SAG1, SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, and Apico. A total of 7 genotypes was identified; the 3 isolates from chickens from Italy were clonal type II, and the others were nonclonal. This is the first report of genetic characterization of T. gondii isolates from animals from these countries.
The aim of this study was to explore sleep quality in a video game population and to prospect the role of different factors such as sociodemographic data, video game duration, intensity of video game playing, and mental and physical health. Two hundred and seventeen participants (24.40 ± 6.98 years old) completed an online questionnaire composed of sociodemographic informations, the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS SF-36), video game play time per week, and intensity of video game playing as defined by Décamps (AIE-Q). We carried out hierarchical cluster analysis on the 7 dimensions of PSQI to determine sleep quality profiles. Two profiles were found: (1) « High sleep quality profile » for 132 (60.83%) participants, and (2) « Low sleep quality profile » for 85 (39.17%) participants. These two profiles were differently associated with video game duration per week, intensity of video game playing, and mental health. Sleep quality was positively related to mental health and negatively with intensity of video game playing. Intensity of video game playing was a more salient factor to predict poor sleep quality than video game duration.
