par Patricia SUSTRAC* « Le Cornet à dés […] on dirait du Chagall en musique ! 1 » À Quimper, la musique, la lecture, le théâtre tiennent une place importante dans la vie des Jacob. La famille est abonnée à des revues comme L'Illustration ou La Revue des Deux Mondes. Le piano trône dans le salon de la rue du Parc, les parents du poète sont mélomanes, la famille fréquente les salles de spectacle de la ville. Prudence Jacob, la mère de l'auteur, est « habile au piano » et « chante délicieusement divers airs d'opérette 2. » Son père entonne volontiers des airs du Second Empire. Cette culture familiale est complétée par l'enseignement du piano 3 pour lequel l'auteur montre « un goût remarquable, à l'inverse de [ses] trois frères 4. » Musique savante ou populaire le font vivre dans un univers riche de sonorités quand, juché sur un tabouret, dans le magasin familial, Jacob copie les théories de Bergson « sur un cahier rose en écoutant les chants des ouvriers bretons de [son] père 5. » Pour Pierre de Belay il se remémore « une jeunesse mélodieuse 6 » et déclare à Michel Manoll : « J'ai été élevé… dans l'opérette 7. » * Patricia Sustrac a publié des articles critiques et biographiques et édité plusieurs correspondances de Max Jacob. Max Jacob et les arts de la scène En ville, les manifestations militaires au Champ de foire, les fêtes ou les parades rassemblent les quimpérois autour du répertoire des compagnies en tournées. Jacob applaudit des pièces de Courteline, de Feydeau ou des opérettes en vogue comme Les Deux orphelines, Les Mousquetaires au couvent-« innocentes opérettes imitées de Boccace » dont l'évocation en des termes effroyables par le curé de Saint-Benoît le fit bien sourire trente ans plus tard et « l'aurait fait trembler [s'il n'avait] eu les fredons dans [sa] tête bourrelée de refrains depuis [sa] cinquième année 8. » Les sociétés musicales jouent les dimanches 9. Jacob évoque les concerts de la musique militaire dans le poème « Le Balcon de Juliette et de Roméo » (Derniers poèmes en vers et en prose, O., 1590). La barcarolle de Guillaume Tell qu'on y donne à entendre est une déclaration d'amour du flûtiste ému pour une jeune et jolie bonne d'enfant : « Elle regardait extasiée le kiosque et l'orphéon. Le chant du rossignol ! le chant de l'alouette ! le chant de l'amour partagé. » Le Cornet à dés évoque aussi les saltimbanques et les forains de passage à Quimper pour quelques représentations. Le poème en prose au titre baudelairien « Tableau de la foire » (O, 409) évoque Mirté Léa, la cadette de Jacob. Éprouve-t-elle du chagrin à l'idée de quitter Quimper après ses noces ou pleure-t-elle le départ du Cirque Alexandre-patronyme d'origine de Jacob-pour Marseille 10 ? Archives municipales de Quimper. P our qui s'intéresse à la biographie de Max Jacob, le patronyme des Villard deviendra vite familier. L'enfance de Jacob évoluait dans un Quimper où cette famille puisait une partie de ses racines et y demeure aujourd'hui encore bien connue. Les touristes peuvent toujours acquérir les fameuses cartes postales de Joseph Villard devenu photographe à l'instigation de son frère Jean-Marie, élève de Nadar et de Daguerre, ou celles de Joseph-Marie, son fils, fondateur de la célèbre collection JOB. Quant aux gourmands, ils peuvent se régaler des confitures de l'entreprise prospère d'Abel en collectionnant de charmants chromos ! Jacob rencontra d'abord Jean-Marie Villard, professeur de dessin au lycée de Quimper 1. Le rude enseignant n'appréciait pas les esquisses de son jeune élève 2. Mais il considérait sûrement d'un oeil bienveillant l'amitié entre ses fils et ce jeune homme qui dégustait nonchalamment une boîte de sardines assis sur le mur du vieux cimetière de Ploaré en face de chez lui en attendant qu'on veuille bien l'inviter, ce qui ne manquait jamais d'arriver.
