A CD-ROM on suicide prevention was evaluated in an Inuit hamlet to examine if knowledge is acquired after viewing this multi-media format of education. Twenty-four respondents showed knowledge increased after viewing. Forty six percent had never used a computer yet 95% felt the technology could train counselors. Such technology may improve knowledge and skills in this cultural setting and perhaps may be useful in other cross-cultural environments.
Seasonal mood changes in this Inuit group living in the Canadian Arctic are elevated above the rates found in other studies using similar survey methods.
The effects of a traditional prenatal education program focused on maternal and infant physical health education were compared with effects of an innovative prenatal program designed to decrease the potentially negative effects of childbirth on the quality of marital relationships. 53 couples participated in the traditional approach and 63 in the innovative program: all expected a first child. Analysis of variance of their scores on the Sexual Relationship Scale and also on the Abbreviated Marital Adjustment Scale administered two months postpartum (controlled for their scores on the 2 scales before the prenatal education program) showed a significant difference between the two groups of parents only with respect to sexual relationship: the couples graduating from the innovative program were more satisfied with sexual aspects of their marriage postpartum.
A comparison of color preferences based on the Lüscher Color Test was made for 21 Inuit residing within the Arctic circle and those of 49 residents of Southern Canada. These two groups have been raised in radically different physical and cultural environments. We expected that such factors could influence color preferences; however, no statistically significant differences were found in relative preferences for blue, green, red, yellow, purple, brown, grey, and black for our data based on Lüscher's scoring and those on our own scoring system independent of Lüscher's theory and scoring.
