Despite the existence of programmes to encourage breastfeeding and studies that show its superiority, still occurs the maintenance of high rates of early weaning, leading to believe that the proposals of official encouragement and support of breastfeeding may not be compatible with reality . Scholars say that the training of professionals in promoting breastfeeding can change significantly in increasing rates of breastfeeding. Thus the objective of this study was the participation of nurses from the core network of health care from the council of Americana -SP, in activities to promote the breastfeeding, through an exploratory study of character-descriptive nature of quantitative and qualitative. Data collection was performed by means of semi-structured interviews, recorded, with all the nurses of basic health care units.Where, 90.5% are female, all concursadas and 61.9% residents in the city. Only 19% have children, these 100% breastfed. The predominant age group is 22 to 30 years of age corresponding to an absolute majority (88.8%). The analysis of data was done through analysis of the thematic content of texts from the transcript of the interviews. After extensive reading of the text, emerged several units of record that have been grouped in clusters of meaning resulting in two thematic categories: "the nurses and lactation" and "other people and breastfeeding." The words show that the nurses carry out actions to promote breast-feeding, few have personal experience with breastfeeding and socio economic situation liable to the user and their social network as factors triggering the early weaning. It is proposed to the council studied the training of health professionals to occur more involved as team; deployment of institutional protocol scovering all units to exploit the potential existing in the current conditions of the core network thus creating a better performance of the same in the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding.
