In Kants Erkenntnistheorie spielt die Tafel der Urteile eine bekannte, hochbedeutende Rolle. Aus den Urteilsarten werden in der transscendentalen Logik die Kategorien abgeleitet, und aus der Vollständigkeit seiner Urteilstafel schliesst Kant, "dass der Verstand durch gedachte Funktionen völlig erschöpft, und sein Vermögen dadurch gänzlich ausgemessen" sei, dass er also auch "die wahren Stammbegriffe des reinen Verstandes, die Kategorien", vollzählig daraus gewonnen habe. Eigentlich müsste man nun annehmen, dass die zu Grunde gelegte Tafel der Urteile schon lange fester Besitz der Logik gewesen sei, dass sie sich durch Jahrhunderte unverändert fortgepflanzt habe und zwar in der Weise, dass niemand mehr es versuchen könnte, ein so fest und klar in sich selbst begründetes Lehrstück anzufechten. Nur dann dürfte sich Kant ohne weiteres auf dasselbe in einem so wichtigen Abschnitt seiner Philosophie berufen. Nun aber ist in der antiken und mittelalterlichen ebenso wie in der vorwolfschen Logik nicht die Kantische Urteilstafel, sondern nur die bekannte Einteilung des Aristoteles zu finden. Sie ist also ein Werk des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts. Es ist daher für eine unparteiische Beurteilung der ganzen Kategorienlehre der Kritik der reinen Vernunft von hohem Interesse, zu untersuchen, ob Kant dieselbe wirklich als fertig übernommen hat, oder ob es in wesentlichen Punkten sein eigenes Werk ist, dem er so unbedingtes Vertrauen schenkt. l ) Die hier veröffentlichte Arbeit bildete ursprünglich in ihrem Kern einen Teil meiner auf Anregung des Herrn Professor Dr. Windelband eingereichten Dissertation: "Urteile und Kategorien. Eine kritische Studie zu Kants transscendentaler Logik". Da sie aber mit dem Ganzen wenig zusammenhing, hielt ich es für angebracht, sie unabhängig davon und daher auch in etwas veränderter Gestalt zu veröffentlichen. 197Er sagt gelegentlich selbst von der Urteilstafel in den Pro* legomena: 1 ) "Hier lag nun schon fertige, obgleich noch nicht ganz von Mängeln freie Arbeit der Logiker vor mir, dadurch ich in den Stand gesetzt wurde, eine vollständige Tafel reiner Verstandesfunktionen; die aber in Ansehung alles Objektes unbestimmt waren, darzustellen." Aus dieser Äusserung scheint hervorzugehen, dass Kant sieh bewusst war, in einigen Punkten die Urteilstäfei doch selbständig gestaltet zu haben. Wir sind daher verpflichtet, anzunehmen, dass er nicht unbedingt an die historische Überlieferung glaubte, sondern infolge eigener Überlegung sich von ihrem Werte Rechenschaft zu geben suchte, wodurch er sicher gelegentlich gezwungen wurde durch die Beurteilung des Verhältnisses eines Urteils zu einer bestimmten Kategorie. Doch ehe wir Schlüsse ziehen, müssen wir die Thatsachen klargelegt haben.Dazu ist es nicht nötig, eine vollständige historische Übersicht über die einzelnen Formen der Urteile zu gebfen,
