A contaminação por metais pesados em áreas de disposição inadequada de resíduos sólidos urbanos tem se revelado um dos grandes problemas ambientais, devido esses materiais possuírem em sua composição diversos tipos de metais potencialmente tóxicos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os níveis de contaminação por metais pesados (Chumbo, Zinco e Cobre) no solo do vazadouro a céu aberto do município de Januária - MG. Para realização do presente trabalho foram coletados 5 (cinco) amostras de solo composta, sendo 4 em pontos distribuídos dentro da área do vazadouro e 1 (um) ponto controle fora da área do lixão. Dentre os elementos analisados apenas o Zinco (Zn) ultrapassou o valor orientador de Referência de Qualidade (VRQ). Ao passo que o elemento Cobre (Cu) não apresentou concentrações acima do VRQ recomendado pelo Conselho de Política Ambiental - COPAM e o elemento Chumbo (Pb) não foi detectado em nenhuma das amostras. O solo da área em estudo foi classificado como sendo de classe 2 de acordo com a legislação vigente.
A destinação final de resíduos sólidos de forma inadequada provoca graves impactos ambientais. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar os impactos ambientais causados pela disposição inadequada dos resíduos sólidos urbanos na cidade de Januária - MG. O presente trabalho foi dividido em duas etapas, no primeiro momento foi aplicado um check-list de forma a identificar os impactos ambientais causados pela disposição inadequada de resíduos sólidos bem como registros fotográficos e no segundo momento foi utilizado a matriz de Leopold. Os resultados da avaliação de impactos ambientais acusaram diversos impactos na área, entre eles alteração na capacidade de uso da terra, dano ao relevo, emissões de odores, contaminação do solo, redução da biodiversidade nativa, entre outros. Neste estudo, fica evidente que a degradação dos recursos naturais ocorridos no vazadouro do Município de Januária são provocadas pela disposição inadequada dos resíduos sólidos.
