Enamel white spot subsurface lesions compromise esthetics and precede cavitation; therefore, they must be halted. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a caries infiltration technique and fluoride therapy on the microhardness of enamel carious lesions. Subsurface carious lesions were produced in 60 bovine specimens with polished enamel surfaces. The specimens were divided into four groups (n=15), according to the treatment used: CON, control-immersion in artificial saliva; DF, daily 0.05% fluoride solution; WF, weekly 2% fluoride gel; and IC, resin infiltration (Icon). The specimens were kept in artificial saliva and evaluated for microhardness at five points: baseline, after caries production, after four and eight weeks of treatment, and a final evaluation after being submitted to a new acid challenge. The repeated-measures analysis of variance showed significant differences according to the type of treatment (TREAT; p=0.001) and time of evaluation (EV; p=0.001). The results of the Tukey test were TREAT: CON = 45.18 (±29.17)a, DF = 107.75 (±67.38)b, WF = 83.25 (±51.17)c, and IC = 160.83 (±91.11)d. Analysis of correlation between the TREAT and EV factors showed no significant differences for DF (138.63 ± 38.94) and IC (160.99 ± 46.13) after the new acid challenge. The microhardness results in decreasing order after eight weeks were IC > DF > WF > CON. It was concluded that the microhardness of carious lesions increased with the infiltration of resin, while the final microhardness after a new acid challenge was similar for DF and IC.

As populações remanescentes de quilombos tiveram seu direito à propriedade das terras em que ocupam garantido pelo Art. 68 dos Atos das Disposições Transitórias da Constituição Federal de 1988. Entretanto, essas populações ainda enfrentam dificuldades de acesso a serviços essenciais como os de saúde. A proposta deste trabalho é apresentar dados referentes ao acesso ao serviço odontológico e estimar a necessidade de prótese da população quilombola de Santo Antônio do Guaporé, Rondônia, Brasil. No presente trabalho foi realizado um estudo transversal seguindo a metodologia proposta pelo Projeto SB Brasil 2003. Foram examinadas 29 pessoas com idade superior a 12 anos. Da amostra total, 62,1% consultaram o dentista pelo menos uma vez; 37,9% consultaram havia mais de três anos e 41,4% foram atendidos no serviço público. Para 58,6% dos examinados, o motivo da consulta foi a dor e 44,8% avaliaram o atendimento como bom. Em relação à necessidade de prótese, 48,3% necessitavam apenas de prótese superior e 72,4% apenas de prótese inferior; 17,2% necessitavam da combinação de próteses removível e fixa superior e 13,8% inferior. Os dados apontam a dificuldade das condições de acesso ao serviço odontológico, e a precariedade das condições bucais, marcadas pela necessidade de tratamento reabilitador.

This study evaluated the dimensional alterations and the solubility of two experimental endodontic sealers based on Copaifera multijuga oil-resin (Biosealer) and castor oil bean cement (Poliquil), maintained in different storage solutions. Twenty specimens (3 mm diameter and 2 mm height) of each sealer were assigned to 2 groups (n=10) according to the storage solution: simulated tissue fluid (STF) or distilled water (DW). The specimens were stored in these solutions during 90 days, being removed every 30 days for weighting. The solutions were renewed every 15 days. The results were subjected to statistical analysis by Dunn's and Mann-Whitney tests (a=0.05). The solubility of Poliquil was higher in STF (38.4 ± 36.0) than in DW (28.4 ± 15.0), while Biosealer showed higher solubility in DW (34.61 ± 6.0) than in STF (18.59 ± 8.0). The storage solution influenced the behavior of sealers in relation to the weight variation (p=0.0001). Poliquil presented higher variation of weight independent of the solution (p=0.239). Biosealer also presented higher variation of weight regardless of the solution (p=0.0001). The solubility of Biosealer was different from that of Poliquil, but both sealers showed low solubility in STF. Under the tested conditions, neither of the materials were according to the ADA'S specification.

Introduction: There is great demand for esthetic treatment by patients who have discolored teeth, because currently aesthetic standards have become stricter and many patients have tooth bleaching procedures performed before or during orthodontic treatment. Objective: To evaluate the bonding of orthodontic brackets to human molars after internal tooth bleaching. Material and method: Forty molars were divided into four groups according to the bleaching agent used: PS) sodium perborate + water; PC) carbamide peroxide; PC + PS) carbamide peroxide + sodium perborate; Cont) water (control group). Bleaching agents placed inside the pulp chambers were replaced every 7 days for 2 weeks, and the brackets were bonded 30 days after the end of bleaching. The shear strength test was performed in a universal testing machine (Emic). Result: ANOVA with a significance level of 5% (p > 0.05), showed no statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.1214). Conclusion: It was concluded that the different bleaching agents studied did not interfere with the bond strength of brackets to enamel and bonding the brackets 30 days after internal bleaching is a safe procedure.

Objective: This study evaluated the morphological alterations, through scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), which occur in the gutta-percha points exposed to periods longer than those recommended. Material and method: 2% chlorhexidine (CLX), 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCL), 2% peracetic acid (PA) and 0.25% peracetic acid solution (PAS) were the solutions used for the following periods: 1 min, 30 min, 6 h and 12 h. The groups were divided according to the solution and disinfection period (n=12). Results: The results indicated the solutions and period tested. At 1 min, all solutions did not differ from the control group. After 30 min, PAS energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) test indicated that all substances and periods altered the chemical composition of the gutta-percha points. At 12 h, the effect of disinfection on the obturation leakage was also evaluated Accordingly, to control group, because 100% of the roots exhibited leakage. The other groups (CLX, NaOCL and PA), although without statistical differences, showed 9, 8 and 8 out of 12 roots with leakage, respectively. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the disinfection process can cause morphological alterations whether the immersion period obturation sealing.
