A obra Globalização, democracia e terrorismo, do historiador Eric Hobsbawm, publicada no ano de 2007, é uma compilação de diversas palestras e conferências proferidas pelo autor no período compreendido entre os anos 2000 e 2006. Isso justifi ca a linguagem fl uida e um certo tom de informalidade no modo de exposição das ideias na obra.É evidente que, por ser um historiador, toda a análise do autor é contextualizada historicamente e ele molda sua narrativa na exposição de eventos concretos e acontecimentos que inclusive pôde vivenciar, já que nasceu no início do século XX, atravessou esse século e faleceu no ano de 2012. Disso já se pode supor a rica contribuição e contemporaneidade de toda a obra de Hobsbawm, aqui representada pelo livro objeto desta resenha.A primeira parte do livro lança um registro histórico bem delimitado que demonstra a perenidade dos impérios e esboça a ação dos Estados Unidos da América na empreitada de erigir um império global sob a falaciosa justifi cativa de "democratizar" ou "humanizar" outros Estados.Ao tratar das perspectivas da democracia no século XXI, o autor demonstra nítido ceticismo quanto ao modelo democrático amplamente disseminado entre os países de tradição liberal. Indica o apoio da maioria, a hegemonia do poder estatal, a aceitação da autoridade desse poder e sua aptidão exclusiva para prestar determinados serviços como premissas da política democrática, e demonstra que elas têm perdido a validade.
