A leishmaniose visceral humana se apresenta entre as mais importantesdoenças negligenciadas no Brasil, estando associada a condições precárias de higiene edegradação ambiental. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever o perfil epidemiológico doscasos notificados de leishmaniose visceral no norte do Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil.Foram analisadas informações sobre os casos notificados de leishmaniose visceral humanarelativas ao período compreendido entre janeiro de 2007 e dezembro de 2011, por meiodo Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINANNET). No período avaliadoforam notificados 525 casos, a maioria pertencia à faixa etária compreendida entre 0 e 10 anosde idade, com n=264 (50,3%), e 329 (62,6%) eram do sexo masculino. Além disso, 373(71%) casos aconteceram na área urbana. O município de Matias Cardoso apresentou osmaiores coeficientes de incidência, atingindo 122,9 por 100 mil habitantes no ano de 2007.Observou-se neste estudo que a urbanização de forma descontrolada, o sexo e a idade sãofatores que influenciam para a ocorrência de casos de leishmaniose visceral, um problemade saúde pública no Norte de Minas Gerais. Sendo assim, os municípios merecem atençãoespecial das autoridades de saúde pública.
