L'idée d'un spectaculaire renforcement de la hiérarchie politique au sein des sociétés nord-alpines des vi e et v e s. av. J.-C., à la faveur des contacts entretenus avec les Grecs et les Étrusques, a été contestée par un courant dominant de la recherche, depuis une vingtaine d'années. Les découvertes de terrain se sont pourtant accumulées graduellement et ont, désormais, définitivement disqualifié ce courant de pensée. Ses tenants ont rapidement changé d'avis, défendant désormais une opinion diamétralement opposée au primitivisme du courant postprocessualiste. La question d'une urbanisation, si loin de la Méditerranée, quatre siècles plus tôt que prévu, a été formulée et se pose dorénavant, en effet, de manière sérieuse et légitime. Elle devait, selon nous, être envisagée par comparaison avec les phénomènes d'urbanisation qui se sont développés sous la forme des cités-Etats grecques et étrusques à partir de la fin du viii e s. av. J.-C. ; ce que nous faisons ici. Nous tentons de montrer, de la sorte, qu'un tel processus était certes en passe d'aboutir, mais qu'il a avorté avant une pleine cristallisation. Après avoir passé en revue les principales idées dans ce domaine via l'approche traditionnelle, les principes de la New archaeology et la réaction postmoderniste si virulente malgré son absence de pertinence, nous soulignons les acquis déterminants d'une nouvelle échelle d'investigation sur le terrain. C'est grâce à ce changement de méthode de recherche que les sites princiers de la Heuneburg, Vix et Bourges sont venus bousculer les critiques primitivistes. Nous avons ainsi les moyens d'examiner s'il est justifié d'appliquer le concept d'urbanisation dans le cas qui nous occupe, en revenant sur la question, fondamentale à nos yeux, de la définition générale de l'urbanisation et en insistant, plus particulièrement, sur les critères archéologiquement exploitables. Nous rappelons ensuite le contexte global de l'urbanisation durant le I er millénaire av. J.-C. en Europe. Pour la Grèce et l'Italie, nous constatons que le processus concret d'urbanisation demeure très difficile à saisir ; davantage même paradoxalement qu'au nord des Alpes. De la Bavière au Berry, c'est un niveau de complexité politique plus élevé encore que celui envisagé par Kimmig et les systémistes qui s'est affirmé. Nous montrons aussi le caractère improbable et invérifiable de deux hypothèses plus récentes : l'une singulière et « magique » proposée pour expliquer la présence d'un cratère grec dans la tombe de Vix, l'autre envisageant que les sites dits princiers auraient été dépourvus d'emprise territoriale. Nous insistons, au contraire des approches particularistes, localistes et relativistes, sur l'évidence de la mise en place d'une économie élargie à l'échelle continentale et sur le rôle à la fois politique, économique et idéologique majeur des centres princiers. Nous précisons la variété des types d'établissements mise en évidence grâce aux progrès de l'archéologie préventive. Toute une gradation se révèle, en effet, entre la simple ferme et ...
