This study provides preliminary evidence that an intervention combining increased physical activity with improvement in the nighttime nursing home environment improves sleep and decreases agitation in nursing home residents.
Incorporating this intervention component into more comprehensive efforts to improve sleep and evaluating the long-term effects of the intervention on skin health are recommended.
Noise and incidents of incontinence care practices were associated with a substantial amount of sleep disruption in residents in all 10 nursing homes, even though there was variability between homes. Interventions minimizing such environmental events are needed to promote better sleep in incontinent NH residents.
