Mots clés Douleur chronique · PsychologieAbstract We first review the four goals of psychological therapy and then consider levels of complexity of this therapy in the management of chronic pain. The cognitive behavioural approach concentrates on the identification of erroneous beliefs and the methods that the therapist can employ to correct these. With the rise in the theory of mirror neurons the phenomenon of empathy is again very much in favour. Research has still to confirm what psychotherapists now believe: that, in the absence of empathetic care, the pain will persist and become chronic. It is essential that methods of assessment are in place if the treatment is to be of high quality. To cite this journal: Douleur analg. 24 (2011).
