L’étude proposée ici comporte deux parties. La première est une analyse lexicale des occurrences des représentants de la famille d’ἁμαρτία dans le corpus de la Bibliothèque historique. Elle permet d’introduire une différence entre ἁμαρτία désignant une faute qui s’ignore initialement en tant que manquement, et ἁμάρτημα caractérisant un acte qui est par essence une infraction à un code. Elle permet également de mettre en évidence d’abord la pluralité des emplois d’ ἁμαρτάνω, qui couvre le sens premier de « manquer sa cible » aussi bien que des sens figurés dérivés tels que « échouer » ou « commettre une faute ou causer un tort », et dont les formes participiales fournissent des substituts lexicaux à ἁμαρτία et ἁμάρτημα. La seconde partie étudie le thème de l’ ἁμαρτία dans l’ensemble de la Bibliothèque historique. Elle montre d’abord que la faute intègre de façon récurrente un schéma binaire l’opposant au bienfait. Elle permet ensuite de caractériser le pouvoir tyrannique en tant que pouvoir dévoyé et criminel. Elle éclaire enfin la pratique historiographique de Diodore par l’analyse de ce qui constitue à ses yeux les « fautes » des historiens.
