Questo articolo analizza, attraverso il filtro dei Performance Studies teorizzati da Richard Schechner, le modalità in cui le categorie di spettacolarità e teatralità emergono dal testo della Divina Commedia. Oggetto specifico dell’analisi è la sequenza dei canti XXI-XXIII dell’Inferno, contrassegnata da un carattere drammatico autonomo, in cui va in scena quella che è stata variamente definita una “farsa”, una “rapsodia” o una “commedia” dei diavoli, protagonisti assoluti dell’episodio. Saranno studiati, perciò, i rapporti tra il “microtesto” dei canti XXI-XXIII con il “macrotesto” della Commedia, gli aspetti teatrali e spettacolari dell’episodio e le fonti a cui il Poeta ha guardato per realizzarlo.
