Colón no sólo descubrió América, descubrió también las rutas de ida y vuelta entre Europa y el Golfo de México. Hasta que se navegó a vela, los buques que partían de los puertos de España, Portugal, Francia e Italia rumboa México, las desembocaduras del Misisipí, cualquier isla del Caribe, Colombia o Venezuela, siguieron la ruta del primer viaje de descubrimiento. Y, a la vuelta, fueron al norte del Mar de los Sargazos, en el paralelo de lasAzores. Incluso hoy en día, quien quiere cruzar el Atlántico a vela elige la ruta del segundo viaje colombino: ¡de Canarias a Guadalupa!.
El descubrimiento de las rutas está conectado con el de los vientos alisios. Fue el mismo Colón el primero que, sin miedo, se enfrentó al Mar de los Sargazos, (2) tuvo las primeras intuiciones de la Corriente del Golfo ydescubrió la declinación magnética occidental.
